Italy give Ghedin winning start

Italy 3-1 Ukraine Pietro Ghedin's tenure as Italy coach got off on the right foot as they began their Group 1 campaign with a home win.

Italy came from behind to give Pietro Ghedin a winning start as coach of the women’s national team - and ensure maximum points in their opening 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier.

Marsico clincher
Nataliya Zinchenko’s early opener for visitors momentarily had nerves jangling before normal service was resumed. Tatiana Zorri levelled on 20 minutes, before Venusia Paliotti gave Italy the lead four minutes into first-half injury time. Lina Marsico sealed the points twelve minutes from time, making it 3-1.

Group favourites
The win takes Italy second in the pool, three points behind Norway with a game in hand, with Ukraine bottom after two defeats. Only the group winners progress to China, and Italy's trip to Norway on 29 October looks pivotal. Ukraine travel to Serbia and Montenegro the following week.
