Iceland stun Germany to end two-decade run

It had been 19 years since Germany lost a qualifier but Iceland ended that run in stunning style.

Away to a nation that had beaten them in all 14 previous meetings,  most recently 5-0 in the 2014 Algarve Cup, Iceland travelled to Wiesbaden for a FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier on Friday and won 3-2 with two goals from Dagný Brynjarsdóttir. Germany were missing Dzsenifer Marozsán, Sara Däbritz, Kristin Demann and Carolin Simon. They now face a real challenge if they are to keep up their record of qualifying for every World Cup and stop Iceland emulating their men by making their finals debut.

That would also leave 2003 and 2007 world champions Germany unable to defend the one major title they still hold – the Olympic gold – having had their 22-year UEFA Women's EURO reign ended in the quarter-finals by Denmark. We show what runs Iceland ended with their victory ...

  • Germany had not lost a Women's World Cup or Women's EURO qualifier since 17 June 1998 v Norway (also 3-2).
  • Germany's qualifying run in that time was P63 W61 D2 including the 1999 World Cup play-off with Ukraine.
  • Germany had won their last 27 Women's World Cup qualifiers since that loss to Norway.
  • Germany had won their last 39 home qualifiers since a 3-1 loss to Norway on 2 May 1996.
  • Germany had won all 17 of their previous World Cup qualifiers since they were separated from Women's EURO for the 1999 edition, scoring 77 goals and conceding five.
  • Germany had not conceded in their last 11 qualifiers since a 4-1 win in Russia on 13 September 2014
  • Germany had won all 14 previous games against Iceland, scoring 56 goals and conceding three (as many as Iceland scored in Friday's win).
