Jönsson latest Sweden casualty

Injured Sweden goalkeeper Caroline Jönsson is out of the FIFA Women's World Cup through injury but there is a call up for veteran Kristin Bengtsson.

Sweden goalkeeper Caroline Jönsson's dream of playing in a second successive FIFA Women's World Cup final is over after she suffered a knee injury - but there is a call up for veteran Kristin Bengtsson in the provisional 30-strong squad for September's tournament in China.

Goalkeeping concern
The Malmö FF player has been Sweden's No1 for most of the last seven years but an anterior cruciate ligament tear in training has ruled her out of the rest of the season and has meant her absence from the 30-strong provisional squad for the finals as her nation aim to go one better than their runners-up finish in 2003. Hedvig Lindahl, who took over from Jönsson in goal at UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2005™ is only herself just back from injury but will have to compete with Sofia Lundgren for a starting place.

Bengtsson recall
Meanwhile, coach Thomas Dennerby has recalled Bengtsson, a 157-cap veteran of three World Cups and five UEFA European Women's Championship final tournaments, despite the versatile 37-year-old defender having retired from international football in November 2005, and the experienced Jane Törnqvist is also back after a long absence. However, there is also room for uncapped Umeå IK strikers Maria Nordbrandt and Madelaine Eklund while their illustrious team-mate Hanna Ljungberg is also included despite another injury-ravaged season.

'Good mix'
Dennerby, who had already lost forward Josefine Öqvist to a knee injury earlier this month, and will make his final cut to 21 players on 14 August, said: "In this initial squad we have a mix of new and old, a lot of experience but also youthful enthusiasm. It feels like we have a good mix of different player types, which gives us the opportunity to change the way we play during a game should it be needed." Sweden's final friendly before the World Cup is in Denmark on 30 August and they meet Nigeria, the United States and Korea Republic in the group stage in China from 11 September.
