Centurion Jones inspires Germany

Germany 4-0 Switzerland Steffi Jones marked her 100th international appearance with a rare goal as the home team went top of Group 4.

Steffi Jones marked her 100th international appearance with a goal which set Germany on course for an impressive 4-0 Group 4 victory against Switzerland in Ulm to maintain their strong start to the FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying campaign.

Carlson double
The 32-year-old defender had scored just eight times in her previous 99 appearances and is hardly renowned for her goalscoring prowess, but she demonstrated a striker's poise on ten minutes, powering in a terrific header. It proved the springboard for a dominant first-half performance from the UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2005™ winners who went into the interval leading 3-0 thanks to further strikes from Britta Carlson and Petra Wimbersky. Carlson added another just after the hour to seal a comfortable win which takes Silvia Neid's side to the top of the section.

Impressive opening
Germany have quickly established an overbearing presence in the group after running in nine goals in their opening two games against Russia and Scotland, and were soon on course for another impressive victory when Jones headed Renate Lingor's free-kick past goalkeeper Marisa Brunner. It came in the midst of a dominant opening period by the home team, who doubled their advantage in some style ten minutes later when Anja Mittag and Wimbersky combined to tee up Carlson, who rounded Brunner and coolly slotted in.

Wimbersky strike
Any slender hopes the Swiss had of mounting a comeback were dealt a final blow nine minutes before the interval, when Wimbersky feinted past the last defender and curled a shot past Brunner. Germany continued to dominate after the break and Birgit Prinz, Mittag and Wimbersky all came close before Carlson sealed a comfortable win just after the hour, converting Kerstin Garefrekes's pinpoint cross.
