Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk described PSV Eindhoven midfielder Orlando Engelaar as "the most disappointed one of the four players" to be cut when naming his final 23-man FIFA World Cup squad.
Engelaar was shorn from Van Marwijk's initial squad along with Feyenoord's Ron Vlaar, AFC Ajax's Vurnon Anita, and PSV team-mate Jeremain Lens. Captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the most experienced member of the squad with 97 international appearances, while FC Twente goalkeeper Sander Boschker is the only uncapped inclusion.
The Netherlands continued their World Cup preparations with a 2-1 friendly victory against fellow finalists Mexico on Wednesday and open their tournament against Denmark on 14 June.
