FC Schalke 04 defender Heiko Westermann has become the fifth player to be withdrawn from Germany's FIFA World Cup party after fracturing a bone in his left foot on Saturday.
The 26-year-old, who captains the Gelsenkirchen club, sustained the injury in the dying minutes of Germany's 3-0 friendly win against Hungary and has joined René Adler (rib), Michael Ballack (ankle), Christian Träsch (ankle) and Simon Rolfes (knee) in missing out on a place in coach Joachim Löw's selection for South Africa.
"Heiko would have played an important role in our team because of his versatility," said Löw. "He had been outstanding in training." Westermann added: "Of course, I am totally crushed because it was a huge goal to play at the World Cup." Germany open their Group D campaign against Australia on 13 June before facing Serbia and Ghana.
