England put eight past San Marino and Germany were comfortable winners in Kazakhstan, but Finland's 1-1 draw in Spain may have been the story of a busy evening of European FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Sergio Ramos might have felt it was his night as he marked his 100th cap with the opening goal against Finland, but the visitors ditched the script in Gijon, Teemu Pukki firing in an equaliser with 11 minutes remaining. That was great news for France, who promptly seized first place in Group I with a 3-1 victory against Georgia.
Croatia won 2-0 against Serbia as the sides met in Zagreb, and Germany maintained their unbeaten start in Group C with a routine 3-0 win in Kazakhstan. England had an easier night still, winning 8-0 against San Marino, though Montenegro remain top of Group H having secured a 1-0 win in Moldova despite playing much of the game with ten men.
Elsewhere, Denmark belatedly secured the first win of their Group B campaign – an impressive 3-0 in the Czech Republic – while Bosnia and Herzegovina put themselves in the clear at the top of Group G with a 3-1 success against second-ranked Greece.
