Cyprus accept coach Nioplias's resignation

Nikos Nioplias has resigned as coach of Cyprus with immediate effect following "friendly discussions" with the national association in the wake of a 2-0 defeat on Tuesday.

The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) have announced that they have parted ways with national team coach Nikos Nioplias.

The 48-year-old former Panathinaikos FC and Greece Under-21 boss tendered his resignation to the CFA board following his side's 2-0 FIFA World Cup Group E defeat to Slovenia in Nicosia on Tuesday. Technical director Michalis Hadjipieris and assistant coach Charalambos Pittas will take temporary charge of the national team for their final two qualifiers, against Iceland and Albania next month.

"Mr Nioplias had informed the CFA of his decision to leave when his contract expires in November but he also said that he was willing to leave with immediate effect if the CFA wishes," the CFA explained. "Following friendly discussions, the CFA informed Mr Nioplias that he should resign from his post immediately."

Nioplias replaced compatriot Angelos Anastasiades in 2011 but failed to reverse the island's poor run of results on the international stage. Cyprus are currently bottom of their qualifying group with four points.
