Shirokov makes Capello's Russia cut

Russia coach Fabio Capello has included injured captain Roman Shirokov in his 23-man squad for the FIFA World Cup but Denis Cheryshev and Pavel Mogilevets miss out.

Russia coach Fabio Capello has included injured captain Roman Shirokov in his 23-man squad for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Capello had to remove two players from the 25-strong provisional party selected on 16 May and left out midfielder Denis Cheryshev, who would have been the only player from a non-Russian club in the group, having spent 2013/14 on loan to Sevilla FC from Real Madrid. Also missing the cut was Pavel Mogilevets, who will still travel to South America on standby having made his senior debut against Slovakia last week.

Shirokov, meanwhile, is in the 23 despite having not played since suffering an Achilles injury on 26 April in action for loan club FC Krasnodar. Sergei Ignashevich, on 96 caps, could become only the second player to reach a century for Russia in Brazil while Aleksandr Kerzhakov, the only squad member with World Cup finals experience from 2002, is one goal off Vladimir Beschastnykh's record of 26.

Having beaten Slovakia 1-0 and drawn 1-1 in Oslo over the last week, Russia face Morocco in Moscow on Friday before travelling to Brazil. They begin Group H on 17 June against South Korea in Cuiaba, then take on Belgium five days later in Rio de Janeiro before a 26 June encounter with Algeria in Cruitiba.

Goalkeepers: Igor Akinfeev (PFC CSKA Moskva), Yuri Lodygin (FC Zenit), Sergei Ryzhikov (FC Rubin Kazan).

Defenders: Vasili Berezutski (PFC CSKA Moskva), Sergei Ignashevich (PFC CSKA Moskva), Georgi Schennikov (PFC CSKA Moskva), Vladimir Granat (FC Dinamo Moskva), Aleksei Kozlov (FC Dinamo Moskva), Andrei Eschenko (FC Anji Makhachkala), Dmitri Kombarov (FC Spartak Moskva), Andrei Semenov (FC Terek Grozny).

Midfielders: Igor Denisov (FC Dinamo Moskva), Alan Dzagoev (PFC CSKA Moskva), Roman Shirokov (FC Krasnodar), Denis Glushakov (FC Spartak Moskva), Viktor Fayzulin (FC Zenit), Oleg Shatov (FC Zenit), Yuri Zhirkov (FC Dinamo Moskva).
