England coach Sven-Göran Eriksson has named Manchester City FC winger Shaun Wright-Phillips and Tottenham Hotspur FC striker Jermain Defoe in a youthful 24-man squad to face Ukraine in next week's friendly international in Newcastle.
World Cup warm-up
Wednesday's game at Saint James' Park is a warm-up before England open their 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in Group 6 with two games in the space of four days, playing Austria in Vienna on 4 September before travelling to Chorzów to face Poland on 8 September.
Wright-Phillips, who is uncapped, and Defoe - who was watched by Eriksson when he scored a fine equaliser for Tottenham in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Liverpool FC on the opening day of the new Premiership season - are two of the English league's most exciting young prospects.
Kirkland called up
Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland is fit again after the wrist injury that ended his hopes of playing a part at UEFA EURO 2004™ and is also included, as is Chelsea FC right-back Glen Johnson, who has one cap to his name.
Striker Michael Owen is included on the day he was unveiled by Real Madrid CF following his sudden move from Liverpool, while Manchester United FC's new forward Alan Smith returns to the England set-up.

Also missing are Wayne Rooney, scorer of four goals in Portugal, and Sol Campbell, who are both ruled out by injury.
