Team award for Liechtenstein

The Liechtenstein national team have been honoured for two ground-breaking results in 2004.

The Liechtenstein national team have been named team of the year in the principality for their achievements in beating Luxembourg and holding UEFA EURO 2004™ runners-up Portugal to a draw.

'Beautiful recognition'
"This award is a product of many things," said national team coach Martin Andermatt. "The team showed excellent spirit and always stayed optimistic. The players and the coaches are now in the spotlight, but behind the success is a lot of hard work and therefore I see this award as a beautiful recognition of our achievements."

Double first
The Alpine nation rewrote their history books twice in the space of four days in October, gaining their first-ever FIFA World Cup point by drawing 2-2 with Portugal, a feat they then surpassed with a 4-0 win in Luxembourg.

Record tally
That was their first-ever win away from home since entering international football in 1994. Prior to that their 33 official internationals had yielded 32 defeats and just one draw, ironically in Luxembourg in April 2002. It was also Liechtenstein's record goal tally for a single match.

Big responsibility
Andermatt added that the award brought with it a big responsibility for the future. "We are carrying this nomination in our hearts and therefore we want to do all in our power to be successful also in the future."
