Schedule forces French rethink

France have cancelled their friendly international against Argentina which was due to take place on 17 August.

France have cancelled their friendly international against Argentina, which was due to take place on 17 August at the Stade de France, as they are unable to commit to a return match.

Heavy schedule
The fixture was arranged in February as part of France's preparations for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, but the French Football Federation (FFF) has decided to cancel the game because of the national side's hectic programme. "Considering the heavy schedule of the national team in qualification for next year's World Cup, and bearing in mind UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying will consist of groups of seven or eight teams, we did not wish to commit firmly to a return game in the short term," said the FFF.

Alternative opponents
The FFF added that it is seeking alternative opponents for the August date, ahead of the conclusion of France's World Cup qualifying campaign in September and October. Raymond Domenech's side sign off for this season with a friendly against Hungary on 31 May.
