Fracture confirmed
Bruno Vale hurt his right foot during Portugal's defeat by Serbia and Montenegro on Thursday in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, and tests carried out on Saturday revealed the FC Porto player would not be fit for the World Cup finals. In a statement on the Portuguese Football Federation's website, team doctors said: "After reviewing Bruno Vale's condition and doing fresh exams, we have confirmed that he broke a bone in his right foot. The recovery period makes his participation in the World Cup impossible." Paulo Santos, 33, has one cap for Portugal, won against Northern Ireland in Belfast on 16 November 2005.
