Belgium defeat Scotland to close in on Brazil

Scotland 0-2 Belgium
Marc Wilmots' side moved a step closer to Brazil as victory stretched their Group A advantage over Croatia to five points.

Belgium are within touching distance of making a first major finals since 2002 after an impressive victory in Scotland stretched their lead at the top of FIFA World Cup qualifying Group A.

With closest challengers Croatia failing to defeat Serbia, victory for Marc Wilmots' men, courtesy of goals from Steven Defour and Kevin Mirallas in either half, moves them five points clear with just two games remaining. A draw in Croatia on 11 October would seal Belgium's qualification.

Scotland did Belgium a favour last time out, defeating Croatia in Zagreb to allow them to build a three point lead, but the Red Devils did not start in sympathetic mood. With Kevin De Bruyne and Nacer Chadli probing down the flanks there was little respite for the hosts, and it was the latter who created the first clear opening, looping a cross to the back post only for Marouane Fellaini to head wide.

De Bruyne drove a low shot at goal which was strongly saved by David Marshall who also kept out Axel Witsel's volley, while at the other end Scott Brown drove a fraction wide from 30 metres. The goal that the visitors had been threatening arrived seven minutes before the interval as De Bruyne streaked clear on the right and drove a low ball into the area which Defour turned in with a smart first-time finish.

Chadli shot straight at Marshall after the break before Christian Benteke shot just wide after a smart turn on the edge of the area. Steven Whittaker shot wide while Shaun Maloney and substitute Jordan Rhodes turned crosses off target as Scotland kept their visitors honest, but Mirallas lithely slipped his marker on 89 minutes before driving into the net to keep the Belgian bandwagon rolling. Scotland, however, are bottom.
