Scotland complete Croatian double to end on high

Scotland 2-0 Croatia
The hosts completed an unlikely double over the Group A runners-up thanks to goals from Robert Snodgrass and Steven Naismith.

Scotland ended their FIFA World Cup qualifying Group A campaign on a high as they sank Croatia in Glasgow, though Igor Štimac's men nevertheless finished second in the section.

Gordon Strachan's side had inflicted a major blow to Croatia's chances of winning the group with their surprise 1-0 victory in Zagreb in June, and the goalscorer that day, Robert Snodgrass, was at it again to put the hosts in front. There were opportunities at both ends as each team threw everything into attack, but Steven Naismith got a second to ensure the Scots completed an unlikely double over the section runners-up.

The visitors were first to threaten in Glasgow but Nikola Kalinić failed to connect cleanly with his effort on the right. Without a win at home in this qualifying campaign, Scotland were determined to give their crowd something to cheer, and almost did so as Naismith smashed a shot over. However, Snodgrass connected with Charlie Mulgrew's left-wing cross on 28 minutes to head the British outfit in front, and was a fraction away from doubling the advantage a short time later as he rattled the post.

It appeared substitute Eduardo would bring Croatia level after the restart as he rounded Allan McGregor, only to roll his attempt just the wrong side of the post. However, visiting hopes went out of the window when the referee pointed to the spot after Domagoj Vida brought down Ikechi Anya in the area. Stipe Pletikosa denied Barry Bannan's spot kick but Naismith was on hand to rifle in the rebound and seal a fourth-place finish in the group.
