Slovenia sweep to Iceland success

Iceland 2-4 Slovenia
Lars Lagerbäck's side slipped to third place in Group E as an adventurous Slovenia earned a victory that gave their own hopes a lift.

Iceland's FIFA World Cup qualifying hopes took a knock as Slovenia ran out 4-2 winners in Reykjavik to move within three points of their third-placed hosts in the Group E standings.

Lars Lagerbäck's Iceland had won 2-1 when the teams met in Ljubljana in March but the boot was on the other foot at the Laugardalsvöllur Stadium as Andraž Kirm gave the visitors an early lead. Despite quick replies from Birkir Bjarnason and Alfred Finnbogason, the latter a penalty, Iceland themselves were swiftly pegged back by Valter Birsa's spot kick. Second-half strikes from Boštjan Cesar and René Krhin secured the points for Slovenia.

Both sides pressed forward from the outset and Slovenia's approach paid dividends within 11 minutes, Kirm putting them in front. It took Iceland only 11 minutes to equalise, however, Bjarnason heading them level, and when Finnbogason was fouled and got up to convert the penalty himself, the tide seemed to have turned.

Slovenia had other ideas and it was 2-2 in the 31st minute, Kevin Kampl earning the spot kick from which Birsa levelled matters again. A minute past the hour Srečko Katanec's men grabbed the initiative for a second time, captain Cesar heading in from close range.

Iceland came again yet this time were unable to find a way through the Slovenian defence and an away victory was assured five minutes from the end when Krhin made it four. The defeat, combined with a 1-1 draw between Albania and Norway, means Iceland drop to third with nine points, two behind leaders Switzerland having played a game more.
