Iceland secured second position in FIFA World Cup qualifying Group E thanks to a 1-1 draw in Norway and Slovenia's narrow defeat by Switzerland.
Needing victory to guarantee the runners-up spot in Group E and a place in the play-offs, Iceland made the perfect start when Kolbeinn Sigthórsson gave them a 12th-minute lead. Daniel Braaten equalised for the hosts on the half-hour, however, leaving Lars Lagerback's charges to rely on Slovenia's loss to confirm their play-off berth.
Although they could no longer qualify, Norway began the brighter of the two sides only for the visitors to open the scoring against the run of play. Tottenham Hotspur FC midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson found AFC Ajax forward Sigthórsson, who netted his 13th goal in 19 internationals with a neat turn and finish.
Norway responded with Per Ciljan Skjelbred setting up Braaten for the equaliser in the 30th minute. Per-Mathias Høgmo's charges promptly pushed forward in search of a second-half winner, yet Iceland stood firm to proceed to November's play-offs.
