Schär leaves Switzerland with one foot in Brazil

Norway 0-2 Switzerland
Carbon-copy goals from Fabian Schär at the start of each half earned a victory that leaves Ottmar Hitzfeld's side on the verge of the finals.

Carbon-copy goals from Fabian Schär at the start of each half defeated Norway 2-0 in Oslo as Switzerland all but booked a FIFA World Cup spot.

The FC Basel 1893 centre-back broke the deadlock after 12 minutes, winning an aerial duel with Espen Ruud to head in a Gökhan Inler free-kick from the left. Six minutes into the second period lightning struck twice, Schär scoring in almost identical fashion to end Norway's hopes and leave Switzerland on the verge of a place in South Africa.

The visitors arrived looking to bounce back from Friday's bruising draw with Iceland, when they squandered a 4-1 lead at home; they took the initiative from the start. Schär's opener helped quash any lingering nerves and Norway's night got worse when Marcus Pedersen limped off with a foot injury. On came Joshua King and the Blackburn Rovers FC striker twice went close before the break, heading wide before forcing a good save from Diego Benaglio.

Schär's second stunted Norway's growing confidence, however, and from then on a third Swiss goal was always more likely. Granit Xhaka perhaps had the best of their opportunities midway through the second period, firing wide, but it mattered not. Switzerland are on the brink of a third successive World Cup finals; Norway will hope to join them via the play-offs.
