• Born in Porto Alegre, Ronaldinho's first steps towards superstardom were taken at local club Grêmio, though it was his success with various Brazil selections, notably in 1999 at the Copa América (which he won) and the FIFA Confederations Cup (where he was the top scorer and best player), that particularly caught the eye.

• Joined PSG in 2001 and won the FIFA World Cup with Brazil the following year, scoring two goals in his five appearances.

• Moved to Barcelona in 2003, for €32.5m, and proved an immediate hit, scoring 15 league goals in his debut campaign, winning the Spanish title in his second and landing a brilliant UEFA Champions League/Liga double in his third.

• After helping Brazil win the 2005 Confederations Cup, he collected the Ballon d'Or that year and then confirmed his status as one of the finest performers of the decade by retaining the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

• Failed to live up to expectations during Brazil's World Cup defence in Germany but won the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award after helping Barcelona lift the 2006 UEFA Champions League.

• Played as an over-age player for Brazil at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, winning a bronze medal, having previously played at the Sydney Games of 2000.

• Disappointed in his final two seasons at Barça before a summer 2008 switch to Milan, where, in his second campaign, with compatriot Leonardo as his coach, he hinted at a return to former glories by scoring 12 league goals.

• The arrival of Massimiliano Allegri in summer 2010, however, led to the Brazilian being increasingly sidelined due to strong competition for places up front; departed for his homeland and Flamengo in January after Milan strengthened their forward line with Antonio Cassano.
