A FIFA World Cup finals participant at Mexico 1970 as representatives of the Asian Football Confederation, Israel have not qualified for a major tournament since becoming a full member of UEFA in 1994. They tend to win more qualifying matches than they lose, and indeed went through the entire 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign unbeaten, but have frequently been undone in the big games against direct rivals. Their best effort in the UEFA European Championship came en route to the 2000 tournament, when they reached the play-offs only to be defeated 8-0 on aggregate by Denmark.

Israel's performances in EURO qualifying have been mixed. After finishing second bottom of their group in the EURO '96 edition, they were runners-up to Spain in the 2000 campaign, 5-0 and 8-0 home victories against Austria and San Marino respectively among the highlights. Third is the best the team has managed since, although under Frenchman Luis Fernandez there was hope they could edge ahead of either Greece or Croatia and take a UEFA EURO 2012 play-off place.

However, defeats against both within the first four games put Israel up against it. Optimism was restored by three successive wins, but failure to take anything from the return matches with the top two resulted in another third-place finish.

Memorable EURO matches
17/11/07: Israel 2-1 Russia, UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying

A late Omer Golan goal earned victory against a side who would make the semi-finals.

06/06/99: Israel 5-0 Austria, UEFA EURO 2000 qualifying
Eyal Berkovic struck twice in what is widely considered the country's finest triumph.

04/09/94: Israel 2-1 Poland, EURO '96 qualifying
Ronen Harazi scored two to earn victory on Israel's EURO debut.

Did you know?
Israel were unbeaten in their first five UEFA European Championship qualifiers, finally losing 4-3 to Poland on 25 April 1995.
