Group G winners Austria capped off a memorable UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign by preserving their unbeaten record with a routine victory against Liechtenstein in Vienna.

Marcel Koller's side, who prevailed thanks to a fortuitous Marko Arnautovic strike and Marc Janko's second-half double, had last month secured their passage to the tournament to end an eight-year absence from major finals.

The visitors, meanwhile, avoided finishing bottom of a UEFA EURO qualification group for the first time, with five points to their name, as Moldova's fate was sealed with a 2-0 loss in Sweden.

Austria started brightly, buoyed by an enthusiastic Ernst-Happel-Stadion crowd, but Janko conspired to miss two early chances in quick succession – from three metres out – after a searching throw-in by Christian Fuchs.

Their luck improved in the 12th minute, however, as Arnautovic skipped inside Niklas Kieber before Martin Büchel's attempted clearance rebounded off his shin and into the far corner of the net.

Moments later, Liechtenstein squandered an opportunity they would live to regret. Franz Burgmeier saw his corner flicked on by Büchel, evading Austrian captain Fuchs, only for Mario Frick to drag a close-range shot wide.

They were made to pay nine minutes after the interval when Daniel Kaufmann's stray pass was intercepted by Martin Harnik before the midfielder fed Janko to slide the ball past Peter Jehle.

The away team barely had time to regroup before the 32-year-old totem struck again to convert his second from inside the area, following neat interplay between Arnautovic and David Alaba down the left.

Frick, on his farewell appearance for Liechtenstein after earning 125 caps since his debut in 1993, was warmly received by both sets of supporters as he made way in the closing stages but the night belonged to Austria.
