Christian Benteke has scored the quickest ever goal in competitive internationals after firing Belgium ahead on 8.1 seconds against Gibraltar on Monday.

The Crystal Palace striker's effort was 0.2 seconds faster than the 8.3 seconds that it took Davide Gualtieri to give San Marino a shock lead against England in FIFA World Cup qualifying in 1993.

Remarkably, it was Gibraltar who kicked off tonight's Group H European Qualifier in the Algarve but they had only two touches before Benteke intercepted. He ran directly at the hosts' defence and clipped past goalkeeper Deren Ibrahim.

The swiftest ever international goal is thought to be Lukas Podolski's strike for Germany against Ecuador in a 2013 friendly, timed at six seconds.
