Romania is relishing a place in the spotlight thanks to UEFA EURO 2020 – and the capital Bucharest has proudly unveiled its host city logo for the pan-European festival of football.
Bucharest is one of 12 cities that will stage EURO 2020 matches, with the National Arena the impressive setting for three group games and one round of 16 encounter.
The new EURO visual identity in place for 2020 sees each of the 12 city logos feature a single iconic bridge from the city in question – acting as a symbol of connection between the various venues.
The logo for Bucharest, revealed on Saturday, features the Basarab Bridge, built between 2006 and 2011. The bridge is 1.9km in length and connects two of Bucharest's main districts.
"Football acts as a bridge between nations," UEFA Executive Committee member Davor Šuker told the ceremony. "Romania is a country that is truly passionate about football, and Bucharest is a splendid city combining old and new."
"EURO 2020 goes far beyond the borders of football," added Romanian Football Federation (FRF) president Răzvan Burleanu. "It will be a festival of unity and diversity, of unity through diversity.
"Our logo is a bridge – and we regard the EURO as a bridge between Europe's various cultures."
The whole city of Bucharest eagerly awaits the role it will play in the football celebration that will happen in all four corners of Europe. "It's an honour and joy to be part of this celebration," said Bucharest's general mayor Gabriela Firea.
The Bucharest National Arena was inaugurated in September 2011, and staged the UEFA Europa League final between Club Atlético de Madrid and Athletic Club the following May.
"I am proud that the city will host four matches in four years' time," said UEFA's chief technical officer Ioan Lupescu, who won 74 caps for Romania and was present at the unveiling ceremony.
"I was born and raised here, and played football at the highest level. It is a huge opportunity for Bucharest and for the whole of Romania."
Bucharest joins London, Rome and Baku in already having launched their 2020 city logos. Nine other cities – Amsterdam, Bilbao, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, Munich and St Petersburg – will unveil their logos in the weeks to come.
