Germany cruise, Lewandowski gets three, England draw

Group C
Germany 7-0 San Marino
Joachim Löw's young starting XI from 11 different clubs maintained Germany's perfect group record, Sandro Wagner scoring a hat-trick on his competitive debut as the section-toppers maintained their five-point lead over Northern Ireland. Captain Julian Draxler calmly curled in the opener before Wagner — who made his debut earlier this week in the 1-1 friendly draw with Denmark — opened his account with a header and scrambled in another from a corner. Further corners led to goals for Amin Younes and Shkodran Mustafi, while Julian Brandt's first senior Germany goal was a diving header. Wagner glanced in Joshua Kimmich's cross for his third.

Azerbaijan 0-1 Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland kept a third successive Group C clean sheet and consolidated second place with a last-gasp win. Stuart Dallas got the goal deep into added time, slipping a low shot into the net after Jonny Evans had seized possession in the Azerbaijan box. The home side had the bulk of possession, and would have gone ahead had Michael McGovern not produced a great save to deny Afran Ismayilov.

Norway 1-1 Czech Republic
The Czech Republic are now four points behind Northern Ireland after being pegged back in Oslo. Theodore Gebre Selassie ghosted in to open the scoring for the visitors in the 36th minute following a deep Michael Krmenčik cross, but early in the second half Alexander Søderlund levelled with a penalty, after Tomáš Sivok fouled to end the jinking run of Tarik Elyounoussi.

Group E
Poland 3-1 Romania
The magic number was 11 for Robert Lewandowski as Poland maintained their unbeaten start, and six-point lead at the top of Group E. The Bayern man opened the scoring from the spot to extend his extraordinary European Qualifiers goalscoring run to 11 successive games. Then, after scoring a header from a Piotr Zieliński corner, he completed his treble with a second well-struck penalty, taking his tally for the campaign to 11, moving him level with Cristiano Ronaldo as this campaign's top scorer. Bogdan Stancu's long-range finish ensured Romania would not go a fourth Group E game without a goal.

Montenegro 4-1 Armenia
Fatos Bećiraj clipped in Vladimir Jovović's ball from the touchline inside two minutes, and captain Stevan Jovetić was the star thereafter, two fine shots from the edge of the box in either half followed by an effortless scissor-kick to complete his hat-trick. Henrikh Mkhitaryan set up Ruslan Koryan for a late consolation goal for Armenia. Montenegro remain second in the section, ahead of Denmark on goal difference with Armenia and Romania four points behind.

Kazakhstan 1-3 Denmark
Denmark kept in touch with Montenegro and secured their first away win in the section. They looked destined for an easy night when Bauyrzhan Islamkhan was dismissed just before the break, Nicolai Jørgensen having stroked home the opener a few minutes earlier. Christian Eriksen made it 2-0 from the penalty spot, but Islambek Kuat gave Kazakhstan some hope with a finish on the break before Kasper Dolberg clipped away his first senior international goal to make it 3-1.

Group F
Scotland 2-2 England
Captaining England for the first time, Harry Kane volleyed the equaliser in added time for the group leaders in an extraordinary finish to these nations' 115h meeting. England seemed set for victory in the 70th minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, fresh from the bench, wriggled through the Scotland defence and turned a shot in. However, Leigh Griffiths produced brilliant free-kicks in the 87th and 90th minutes to turn the game, only for Kane to level from a deep Raheem Sterling cross.

Lithuania 1-2 Slovakia
Second-placed Slovakia moved to within two points of England, and remain one ahead of Slovenia, thanks to a win that effectively ends Lithuania's chances. Vladimír Weiss turned and shot in on 32 minutes following a pass from Marek Hamšík, who himself got the second not long before the hour with a powerfully-struck free-kick. Lithuania managed a last-gasp consolation but are adrift in fifth.

Slovenia 2-0 Malta
Slovenia remain in strong contention but were made to work by point-less Malta. The home side got their opener just before half-time when Josip Iličić produced a superb curling effort from the edge of the box. Then, with six minutes left, Iličić set up Milivoje Novakovič to double the lead with his 32nd Slovenia goal on his 80th and final appearance.
