Switzerland coach Jakob Kuhn has given uncapped FC Basel 1893 forward Eren Derdiyok the opportunity to stake a claim, naming the 19-year-old in his squad to face England at Wembley on 6 February.
Six goals in four games
With injuries to established strikers Marco Streller and Alexander Frei, Derdiyok has been promoted to the senior fold from the Under-21s. Although he has started only six Swiss Super League games for Basel since his debut last season, the teenager has caught the eye with the U21 team in their UEFA European Championship qualifiers. He has scored six goals in four Group 5 matches. His target now will be to keep his place in the squad for the home game against Germany on 26 March. UEFA EURO 2008™ co-hosts Switzerland will face the Czech Republic, Portugal and Turkey in Group A this summer.
