Reinhard Grindel started his career as a football official in 2011, serving as first vice-president of the Lower Saxony regional association. Two years later, he became treasurer of the German Football Association (DFB), where he also served as chief anti-corruption officer.

Grindel had previously been a long-time journalist and politician. From 2002 until the summer of 2016, he was a member of the German federal parliament. In his youth, Grindel was a player for SC Victoria Hamburg. He was elected president of the German Football Association (DFB) in April 2016.

He was elected to the UEFA Executive Committee, and became a UEFA vice-president, at UEFA's Helsinki Congress in April 2017. He was also elected to the FIFA Council as a member at the same Congress, and was re-elected for the 2019-23 period at UEFA's Rome Congress in February 2019.
