Inter mourn Aurelio Milani

FC Internazionale Milano are mourning the death of Aurelio Milani, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80.

Milani is most fondly remembered at Inter for scoring the Nerazzurri's second goal in their 1964 European Champion Clubs' Cup final triumph over Real Madrid CF. The striker had made his Serie A debut with UC Sampdoria in 1958, having previously shown prolific form with various clubs in the lower leagues. After Sampdoria, he had spells with Calcio Padova and ACF Fiorentina, finishing as the joint-leading scorer in Serie A – alongside José Altafini – in the 1961/62 campaign with 22 goals.

Milani then joined 'La Grande Inter', coached by Helenio Herrera at the time. His most famous goal came on 27 May 1964 – a powerful strike from distance that helped Inter to a 3-1 victory against Madrid in Vienna and their first European crown. Though Milani then suffered a career-ending injury the following season, he still received Scudetto and European Cup winners' medals in recognition of his role in another trophy-laden campaign for his club.

"We remember his career with the Nerazzurri, his dedication to the cause and the joy that he brought to millions of fans and football lovers as he became a legend with the Grande Inter."
