SYNLAB to provide COVID-19 testing at UEFA competition matches

SYNLAB has been entrusted by UEFA to carry out COVID-19 testing for all UEFA competitions, starting with the resumption of this month’s UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League final tournaments.

As part of the measures undertaken to implement the UEFA Return to Play Protocol (hereafter: the Protocol), which sets out the framework of sanitary and hygiene-related procedures - including in relation to testing - as well as operational protocols that will be applied when staging UEFA competition matches - UEFA has appointed SYNLAB, a leading European medical diagnostic services provider as its “UEFA Laboratory Diagnostics Provider 2020/2021”.

This appointment is an important step in the direction of creating an as safe as possible environment, when UEFA competition matches resume this month. SYNLAB will be responsible for COVID-19 testing for players, officials and venue staff, which is an essential part of UEFA’s Protocol. The agreement will see SYNLAB be responsible for testing for the remainder of the 2019/20 season, as well as the 2020/21 campaign.

“The health of the players, staff, referees and everyone operating in the stadium is our main priority,” said UEFA deputy general secretary, Giorgio Marchetti. “This is why we are delighted to be partnering with an industry leader like SYNLAB who will help us ensure our competition matches are played in an as safe as possible environment”

The agreement will see SYNLAB become UEFA’s provider for COVID-19 testing across UEFA’s competitions. To ensure the safety of all players and staff involved, UEFA and SYNLAB have established a procedure for rigorous testing in accordance with the applicable local laws and regulations as established by the competent national authorities:

• Testing of all players, officials and venue staff for COVID-19 ahead of every match using the RT-PCR or a medically equivalent testing method.

• Sample collection and testing will be conducted by SYNLAB or one of its partners.

• Only persons who have been cleared in accordance with the Protocol will be allowed to have access to the stadium.

“We are proud UEFA chose SYNLAB as their provider for laboratory diagnostics, recognizing our medical excellence and geographic footprint in Europe,” said Mathieu Floreani, CEO of SYNLAB Group. “With our engagement for safe UEFA matches and competitions, we want to reconnect millions of fans with football, which is an important aspect of European culture.”
