Former Real Madrid and Spain forward Amancio Amaro has died at the age of 83.

Amaro joined Madrid from hometown club Deportivo La Coruña in 1962 after hitting 25 goals in 26 games for the Galician side in the Spanish second tier the previous season. He spent the remaining 14 years of his playing career in the capital, winning nine Spanish titles and scoring Madrid's opening goal in their 2-1 win against Partizan in the 1966 European Cup final.

He also scored 11 goals in 42 appearances for Spain, most crucially the extra-time winner against Hungary in the semi-finals of the 1964 UEFA European Championship. Hosts Spain went on to defeat the Soviet Union in the final.

After hanging up his boots, Amaro joined Madrid's coaching team and won the second division title in 1983/84 as coach of the club's reserve side, Real Madrid Castilla. He took charge of the senior team for the following season, and later joined the Real Madrid board of directors, serving as honorary president from 2022 onwards.
