UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has been chosen as Slovenia’s sports personality of 2016, in a vote held by the country’s prestigious sports daily newspaper Ekipa SN.

Journalists and readers of Ekipa SN bestowed the prestigious award on a sports administrator for the first time. The UEFA President finished ahead of ski jumper Peter Prevc and Slovenian national team goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

“It’s a huge honour that the Slovenians and Slovenian sports journalists see me as the person who stood out in 2016, to the point where my achievements were paralleled with the amazing achievements of Slovenian sportsmen and women,” said Mr Čeferin at the award ceremony. “I am really honoured that the people recognised my successful candidature for UEFA President as something major and important.”

Aleksander Čeferin was elected as UEFA’s seventh President last September, after serving as president of the Football Association of Slovenia (NZS) since 2011. “I believe I proved that big things are possible if you approach them in the right way,” he said.
