Crowd problems cost clubs

Ferencvárosi TC, AC Sparta Praha and FC Baník Ostrava have been fined for crowd trouble by UEFA.

Disciplinary regulations
The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body punished the Hungarian team for several infringements of the UEFA disciplinary regulations on and off the field at the game, which Ferencváros won 3-1 to advance to the UEFA Cup group stage.

Racist chants
The body heard that Ferencváros supporters directed monkey chants towards Millwall players and that Millwall fans had been subjected to aggressive behaviour inside the ground. In addition, five Ferencváros players were cautioned and Bengal lights were set off by the club's followers.

Sparta fined
In a second case, Czech side AC Sparta Praha have been fined €32,000 for the racist attitude shown by some of their supporters at the UEFA Champions League match against Olympique Lyonnais last Tuesday.

Previous charges
The Control and Disciplinary Body heard that Sparta fans directed monkey chants at Lyon players on several occasions during the tie. The body took into account the fact that Sparta had been sanctioned on three previous occasions for similar conduct by its supporters.

Opponents punished
Meanwhile, another Czech team, FC Baník Ostrava, have been fined €26,000, and English club Middlesbrough FC €6,500, for incidents at their UEFA Cup first round second-leg meeting last Thursday.

Ostrava problems
Baník were found guilty for the particularly improper conduct of some of their fans, who set off a pyrotechnic device and threw missiles, and were involved in a serious clash with Middlesbrough supporters before the kick-off which, the disciplinary body said, could have endangered the safety and physical integrity of both players and spectators. Some Baník fans were also found to have directed collective racist abuse against Middlesbrough players.

Supporters clash
The Czech side were found guilty of failing to take appropriate security and segregation measures, particularly in dealing with opposition supporters travelling without official arrangements or even without tickets. Middlesborough were fined for the improper conduct of their fans involved in the clashes.

Appeals procedure
All of the clubs have until midnight on Monday to lodge appeals against their fines. Other decisions taken at the meeting will be communicated in the course of next week.
