Match background Only this chapter

Midtjylland's quest for their first goal and point in the UEFA Champions League continues at home to Ajax, who also have ground to make up in Group D.

• While the Danish debutants have lost at home to Atalanta (0-4) and away to Liverpool (0-2) in their first two fixtures, Ajax looked set to respond to their opening 1-0 loss at home to the English club with victory in Italy, only for Atalanta to come from two goals down and earn a 2-2 draw.

• The sides have never crossed paths before, and this is also Midtjylland's first game against a team from the Netherlands.

Form guide
Midtjylland
• Midtjylland are the fifth Danish club to take part in the UEFA Champions League group stage, and the first since Copenhagen in 2016/17.

• Their only previous experience of a European group stage was in 2015/16, when they finished runners-up in their UEFA Europa League section before losing in the round of 32 to Manchester United.

• Champions of Denmark for the third time in 2019/20 – all those titles coming in the last six seasons – Midtjylland have already made history in 2020/21; they had never previously won more than one UEFA Champions League tie in a season.

• Midtjylland were 1-0 winners at Ludogorets in this season's one-off second qualifying round tie before a 3-0 home defeat of Swiss side Young Boys in the next stage. They then got the better of Slavia Praha in the two-legged play-offs (0-0 a, 4-1 h), three of their second-leg goals coming from the 84th minute onwards.

• The club's two previous forays into the UEFA Champions League both proved short-lived. On their 2015/16 debut they won both legs against Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar in the second qualifying round (1-0 h, 2-0 a) before being eliminated by APOEL on away goals in the next stage (1-2 h, 1-0 a); in 2018/19 they lost 2-1 at Kazakhstan's Astana in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie, going out by the same aggregate scoreline.

• This season's results mean Midtjylland have won six of their 12 UEFA Champions League matches, qualifying included (D2 L4). The second-leg defeat of Slavia was the first time they had won without keeping a clean sheet.

• In 2019/20 Ulvene played only one European tie, going down 7-3 to Scottish side Rangers in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round (2-4 h, 1-3 a).

• The Danish side were four European games without a win (D1 L3), losing three in a row, before this season's qualifying successes.

• Midtjylland have won only three of their last eight home European matches (D2 L3).

• Midtjylland are one of four teams making their group stage debut in 2020/21; Krasnodar, Rennes (both Group E), and İstanbul Başakşehir (H) are the others.

Ajax
• Ajax are making their 16th appearance in the group stage, matching PSV Eindhoven's Dutch record. It is their third straight appearance in the UEFA Champions League proper, and the first time they have gained automatic qualification since 2014/15.

• Ajax were Dutch champions for the 34th time in 2018/19 – their first league title since 2014 – and also lifted the Dutch Cup to claim their eighth domestic double, and a first since 2002. No league title was awarded last season.

• Ajax have qualified from their UEFA Champions League group only once in their last seven appearances in the competition.

• Having gone all the way from the second qualifying round to the semi-finals in 2018/19 – the first Dutch side to reach the last four since PSV in 2004/05 – Ajax again came through two qualifying rounds to reach the 2019/20 group stage, but advanced no further after finishing third in their section behind Valencia and Chelsea. Erik ten Hag's team won their first two matches and picked up ten points (W3 D1 L2) but a 1-0 home defeat against the Spanish side on Matchday 6 proved costly.

• Ajax's subsequent UEFA Europa League campaign also proved short-lived; they lost to Getafe in the round of 32 (0-2 a, 2-1 h).

• The Amsterdam club won six of their 12 European matches in 2019/20 (D3 L3).

• Ajax picked up seven points away from home in last season's group stage and are now unbeaten in ten away matches in the UEFA Champions League (W6 D4). Including the competition's qualifying phase, their unbeaten run on the road stretches to 16 matches (W7 D9).

• Ajax came out on top in the most recent of their eight matches against Danish clubs, beating Copenhagen 2-0 at home in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League round of 16 second leg to progress 3-2 on aggregate. Their record against Danish clubs is W3 D2 L3.

• A 2-1 loss in Copenhagen in the first leg of that tie was Ajax's first defeat in Denmark in their fourth game in the country (W1 D2).

Links and trivia
• Have played in the Netherlands:
Mikael Anderson (Excelsior 2018/19 loan)
Anders Dreyer (Heerenveen 2019/20 loan)

• Anderson made two Eredivisie substitute appearances against Ajax while at Excelsior, coming on in the second half of a 1-7 home defeat and 6-2 loss in Amsterdam.

• Dreyer was a second-half substitute in Heerenveen's 4-1 defeat at Ajax in August 2019.

• Have played in Denmark:
Mohammed Kudus (Nordsjælland 2018–20)

• Kudus' record in six games against Midtjylland with Nordsjælland was D2 L4; his only goal came in a 3-3 draw on 4 March 2019.

• Pione Sisto played 90 minutes as Celta Vigo drew 2-2 at home to Ajax in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League group stage.

• In the same group that season, Alexander Scholz was part of the Standard Liège side that lost 1-0 in Amsterdam and drew 1-1 at home to Ajax.

• Nikolas Dyhr and Nicolas Madsen were members of the Midtjylland team that lost 3-1 to Ajax in the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals on 18 August 2020. Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Youri Regeer featured for Ajax.

Latest news

Midtjylland
• Midtjylland have won seven of their 13 matches this season in all competitions; two of their four defeats have come in Group D.

• The Danish champions lost their first league game of 2020/21, 2-0 at SønderjyskE on 11 September, but picked up 13 points from the next five (W3 D1).

• Nordsjælland were 4-1 winners at home to Midtjylland on Saturday, meaning the visitors have now lost four of their last 11 league matches (W5 D2).

• On 24 October the Wolves came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Brøndby with all their goals coming in the final half-hour, Erik Sviatchenko scoring a 94th-minute winner.

• Midtjylland have now won only two of their six away games in all competitions this season (D2 L2) – the victory at Brøndby was the first since their first away trip, 1-0 at Ludogorets in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.

• In contrast, Midtjylland had won all five home games in all competitions before losing to Atalanta on Matchday 1.

• Midtjylland kept five clean sheets in their first six games in 2020/21 but have managed none in the subsequent seven, conceding 16 goals.

• Frank Onyeka made his Nigeria debut in a 1-0 friendly loss to Algeria on 9 October.

• Sory Kaba scored Guinea's first goal in a 2-1 friendly win against Cape Verde on 10 October.

Ajax
• André Onana's next appearance in UEFA club competition will be his 50th.

• Maarten Stekelenburg (2000–11) and Davy Klaassen (2011–17) both rejoined Ajax this summer.

• Ajax's 100% start to the season came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at Groningen on 4 October. That was their fourth match of the new Eredivisie campaign; in 2019/20, they were undefeated until their 16th fixture.

• The Amsterdammers had won their first three Eredivisie matches this season, scoring six goals and conceding only one. They returned to winning ways on 18 October with a 5-1 home victory against Heerenveen.

• On 24 October Ajax recorded a record Eredivisie victory, winning 13-0 at VVV-Venlo. They are the first team ever to score 13 goals in a Dutch top-flight game, beating their 12-1 win against Vitesse in May 1972, and the first Dutch club to hit double figures in an Eredivisie match since PSV Eindhoven beat Feyenoord 10-0 on 24 October 2010, exactly ten years previously.

• Lassina Traoré scored five goals at VVV, the first Ajax player to do so in an Eredivisie game since Marco van Basten hit six in 1985. Traoré also provided three assists; Frenkie de Jong had been the last Ajax player to do so in a league match, in 2017.

• Traoré had last scored for Ajax on 16 February; prior to the VVV game, his 15 Eredivisie appearances had yielded two goals.

• On Saturday, Ajax made it three successive Eredivisie wins, and 23 goals scored, with a 5-2 win against Fortuna Sittard in Amsterdam in which Klaassen scored twice.

• Having lost four of their last six matches in all competitions in 2019/20 (W2), Ajax have suffered six defeats in their last 15 games, with the Atalanta game the only draw in that sequence.

• Summer signing Mohammed Kudus missed the loss at Groningen through injury but returned against Heerenveen to score his first goal for Ajax. However, he then had to be substituted early on against Liverpool after injuring his right knee and is not expected to play again this year after surgery.

• Antony sat out the Liverpool match with an unspecified injury but returned to face VVV. He was carried off on a stretcher late on on Matchday 2 but recovered to play 66 minutes on Saturday.

• Klaas-Jan Huntelaar missed the trip to Atalanta due to a shortage of match fitness and was an unused substitute on Saturday.

• David Neres returned as a substitute on the opening day of the Eredivisie season, a 1-0 win at Sparta Rotterdam on 13 September, having not played since suffering a knee injury on Matchday 4 of last season's UEFA Champions League, a 4-4 draw at Chelsea on 5 November 2019.
