Match background Only this chapter

Chelsea's new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy faces a rapid reunion with Rennes, the club he swapped for Stamford Bridge in September, on Matchday 3.

• Mendy's new club are level with Sevilla on four points at the top of Group E. After being held to a goalless draw at home by the Spanish side on Matchday 1, Chelsea recorded a 4-0 victory at debutants Krasnodar, their biggest UEFA Champions League away victory since November 2017.

• This is the clubs' first meeting and Rennes are looking for their first UEFA Champions League win having been held 1-1 at home by fellow group stage newcomers Krasnodar on Matchday 1 before a 1-0 loss at Sevilla last time out.

Form guide
• Fourth in the Premier League in 2019/20, this is Chelsea's 17th venture into the UEFA Champions League group stage and a third in four years. The exception came in  2018/19, when they won the UEFA Europa League under Maurizio Sarri.

• Chelsea's last four UEFA Champions League campaigns have all ended in the round of 16. In 2019/20 they were heavily beaten home (0-3) and away (1-4) by eventual champions Bayern München at that stage. The loss in Munich ended the London club's ten-match unbeaten run away in Europe (W7 D3).

• Last season Frank Lampard's side recovered from a Matchday 1 defeat at home to Valencia (0-1) to progress as Group H runners-up with 11 points, finishing behind the Spanish side on head-to-head record.

• Matchday 2 was only the Blues' second win in their last seven UEFA Champions League matches (D3 L2).

• European champions in 2012 having been runners-up four years earlier, Chelsea have reached the round of 16 on 14 occasions.

• The London side have won their UEFA Champions League group 11 times, although they have been runners-up in their section on each of their last two participations.

• Chelsea won 2-1 away and at home against LOSC Lille in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage, Tammy Abraham scoring in both games with César Azpilicueta getting the winner in the second at Stamford Bridge.

• Despite those wins, Chelsea have still won only three of their last nine games against French clubs, home and away (D2 L4).

• The Blues have, however, lost only one of their nine home matches against Ligue 1 visitors (W5 D3), Paris Saint-Germain running out 2-1 winners at Stamford Bridge in the 2015/16 round of 16 second leg to win the tie 4-2 on aggregate.

• Rennes are making their European Cup debut in 2020/21 having finished third in Ligue 1 last season.

• The Brittany club have played 64 matches in UEFA competition, 42 of them in the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League.

• This is Rennes' third successive season playing European football, a club first.

• Having reached the UEFA Europa League round of 16 in 2018/19, Julien Stéphan's side finished fourth in their section in the same competition last season, picking up four points to finish behind Celtic, CFR Cluj and Lazio.

• Rennes were 2-0 winners at home to Lazio on Matchday 6 in last season's UEFA Europa League, their only win in their last nine European matches (D2 L6).

• Les Rouge et Noir are the 11th Ligue 1 club to take part in the UEFA Champions League group stage and the first French debutants since Montpellier in 2012/13.

• Rennes have lost their last five European away matches; a 3-1 win against Real Betis in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League round of 32 second leg (6-4 aggregate) was the last time they avoided defeat on their travels.

• Rennes have lost both away games against English clubs and won both at home. Their most recent trip ended in a 3-0 loss in London at Arsenal in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League round of 16, spelling elimination despite a 3-1 home first-leg success; they also went down 1-0 at Aston Villa in the 2001 UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-final second leg, losing the tie on away goals (2-1 h), meaning they are still seeking their first goal in England.

Links and trivia

Latest news

• Chelsea are unbeaten in nine games in all competitions (W4 D5). They were 3-0 winners at Burnley on Saturday, their fourth successive clean sheet.

• Chelsea have won five of their 11 fixtures in all competitions this season, losing only one – 2-0 at home to champions Liverpool in the Premier League on 20 September.

• Having managed Chelsea for 62 matches without a goalless draw, Frank Lampard oversaw two scoreless matches in succession – against Sevilla and at Manchester United in the Premier League – before the win at Krasnodar.

• Werner (2) and Havertz both scored their first Premier League goals for Chelsea in a 3-3 home draw against Southampton on 17 October. Ziyech got his first for the club at Krasnodar and opened his Premier League account on Saturday.

• The Blues have scored 16 goals in their seven Premier League matches in 2020/21 so far, and have managed three or more in eight of their last 13 league fixtures.

• Edouard Mendy has kept clean sheets on his first three Premier League appearances for Chelsea, the first goalkeeper to do so since Petr Čech in 2004. He has kept five clean sheets in his six Blues outings and has not conceded since the 83rd minute of his debut, a 1-1 draw at Tottenham in the last 16 of the English League Cup 29 September – a run of 457 minutes.

• Lampard's side lost 5-4 on penalties to Tottenham in that League Cup tie.

• Mason Mount's deflected shot gave England a 2-1 victory at home to Belgium in the UEFA Nations League on 11 October.

• Werner and Havertz both found the net in Germany's 3-3 draw at home to Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League on 13 October.

• Reece James made his first start for England on 14 October, a 1-0 loss at home to Denmark in the UEFA Nations League; he was shown a red card after the final whistle.

• Olivier Giroud won his 100th cap for France in a 7-1 friendly win at home to Ukraine on 7 October. He marked the occasion with two goals, taking his all-time tally for Les Bleus to 42, one more than Michel Platini and nine behind France's record scorer Thierry Henry.

• Christian Pulišić came on as a late substitute in the 4-0 home win against Crystal Palace on 3 October, his first appearance since suffering a hamstring injury in the FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal on 1 August. The American has made five appearances this season, including in both of Chelsea's Group E games, but was a late withdrawal from Saturday's line-up after suffering a hamstring injury in the warm-up.

• Billy Gilmour has been sidelined by a knee injury since 9 July.

• Kepa has missed Chelsea's last two games with a shoulder problem.

• Thirteen Rennes players made their first appearance in the UEFA Champions League, group stage to final, on Matchday 1, including goalscorer Sehrou Guirassy. Only Steven Nzonzi and Martin Terrier had previously appeared in the competition.

• Rennes lost their unbeaten Ligue 1 record on 23 October, going down 2-1 at home to Angers despite taking a first-half lead through Adrian Hunou's second goal in three league appearances.

• Their Ligue 1 record this season is now W5 D3 L1; they have scored 18 goals in their nine games, coming from behind to beat Brest 2-1 at home on Saturday.

• That was Rennes' first win in six matches in all competitions (D3 L2), since a 3-0 Ligue 1 success at St-Étienne on 26 September that was their fourth successive victory.

• Guirassy scored twice on his first start for Rennes, a 4-2 win in Nîmes on 13 September. He also found the net in that 3-0 success at St-Étienne.

• On 7 October Eduardo Camavinga, aged 17 years 333 days, became France's youngest goalscorer since Maurice Gastiger against Switzerland in March 1914. Camavinga scored the opening goal in a 7-1 friendly win against Ukraine at the Stade de France.

• Camavinga had already became the youngest player to represent France since Gastiger in 1914 when he made his senior debut aged 17 years 304 days in the UEFA Nations League game against Croatia on 8 September (4-2).

• Camavinga is also the youngest player to sign a professional contract with Rennes (17 years 35 days, December 2018), the first player born in 2002 to feature in one of Europe's top five leagues (April 2019) and the youngest goalscorer in Rennes' history (v Lyon, December 2019, 17 years 36 days).

• James Lea Siliki (adductors) made his first appearance this season at Sevilla after being injured in a pre-season friendly against St-Étienne on 12 August.

• Daniele Rugani (thigh) and Benjamin Bourigeaud (muscle) both had to be replaced on Matchday 2, the former missing Saturday's win in which Bourigeaud was a second-half substitute. Flavien Tait (illness) sat out the Brest game.

• Camavinga, who also has a muscle problem, has not played since going off after an hour at Angers on 23 October.

• Faitout Maouassa suffered an ankle injury against Monaco on 9 September and is expected to be sidelined until December.

• Goalkeeper Alfred Gomis recovered from an adductor problem to make his Rennes debut on Matchday 1.
