Match background Only this chapter

Zenit welcome Lazio to St Petersburg with the home side in danger of being cut adrift at the bottom of Group F.

• The Russian champions have lost both of their first two games in the section, at home to Club Brugge (1-2) and at Dortmund (0-2), and are already three points behind the German club, who are third in the standings. Lazio are level with Club Brugge on four points thanks to a 3-1 home win against Dortmund and, in their most recent fixture, a 1-1 draw in Belgium.

• The sides have never met before and Lazio have not faced a Russian club in the 21st century, although Zenit do have recent experience against Italian opponents.

Form guide
• Zenit claimed their seventh USSR/Russian league title in 2019/20, and their second in a row; their last six triumphs have all come from 2007 onwards. They also added the Russian Cup to complete the club's second domestic double.

• This is the St Petersburg outfit's eighth UEFA Champions League group campaign; they reached the round of 16 in 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2015/16 but have never progressed further.

• In 2019/20, Zenit finished fourth in their section, behind RB Leipzig, Lyon and Benfica despite picking up seven points from their six matches. It was their earliest European exit since 2009/10, when they were eliminated in the UEFA Europa League play-offs.

• The St Petersburg team have won only three of their last 13 European matches (D1 L9).

• Zenit have also recorded only two victories in their last 11 UEFA Champions League games (D1 L8).

• Zenit's last home game against Serie A visitors brought a 2-0 win against Torino in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League round of 16 first leg, setting up a 2-1 aggregate triumph.

• That made it three wins in Zenit's last five matches against Italian clubs (L2), with the first five meetings having brought two draws and three defeats. At home, Zenit have won two of their five games with Italian sides (D1 L2).

• This is Lazio's sixth UEFA Champions League campaign. On their most recent appearance, in 2007/08, they finished fourth in their section having picked up only five points from six games. Their previous appearances in the competition all came between 1999 and 2004.

• Lazio's record in the initial group stage is now W13 D8 L11.

• The Matchday 1 win against Dortmund was only Lazio's second in their last 13 UEFA Champions League matches, group stage to final (D5 L6).

• Before their first Group F game, Lazio's sole UEFA Champions League tie since 2007 had been a play-off defeat by Bayer Leverkusen in 2015/16 (1-0 h, 0-3 a).

• The Rome club's most successful European Cup campaign came in 1999/2000, when they reached the quarter-finals before losing to Valencia (2-5 a, 1-0 h).

• The Biancocelesti took part in the UEFA Europa League group stage in 2019/20, winning two of their fixtures but losing the other four to finish third in the standings behind Celtic and CFR Cluj.

• Simone Inzaghi's side – who qualified for the group stage by finishing fourth in Serie A in 2019/20 – have lost eight of their last 12 European matches (W3 D1).

• Matchday 2 marked Lazio's first draw in 19 European games, since they were held 2-2 by Dynamo Kyiv in Rome in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 first leg in March 2018.

• Lazio are unbeaten in their four previous matches against Russian clubs, although three of those matches ended all square. The exception was a 3-0 win against Rotor Volgograd in Rome in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup second round second leg, confirming an aggregate success by the same score.

• Lazio also came out on top in their most recent meeting with Russian opponents, beating Lokomotiv Moskva on away goals in the semi-final of their victorious 1998/99 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup campaign (1-1 a, 0-0 h).

• Liverpool, with Reina in goal, beat Yuri Zhirkov's CSKA Moskva 3-1 after extra time in the 2005 UEFA Super Cup in Monaco.

• Vyacheslav Karavaev scored his first goal for Russia on 3 September in a UEFA Nations League match against Serbia. Artem Dzyuba scored twice in a 3-1 victory in which Sergej Milinković-Savić played for the visitors.

Latest news

• Yuri Zhirkov's next appearance in UEFA club competition will be his 100th.

• Zenit's six-game unbeaten domestic run (W3 D3) was ended on 24 October as they went down 2-1 at home to Rubin despite taking a first-half lead through Aleksandr Erokhin.

• That was only Zenit's second loss in their last 32 Russian Premier League games (W22 D7). They were 2-0 winners at Khimki on Sunday, Erokhin scoring the clinching second goal to find the net for the fourth successive league game.

• Zenit beat Lokomotiv Moskva 2-1 in the Russian Super Cup on 7 August.

• Andrei Mostovoy, a scorer on Sunday, won his first cap on 7 October as Russia lost 2-1 in a Moscow friendly against Sweden.

• On 17 October Sebastián Driussi returned from a knee injury that had kept him out since 26 August.

• Malcom has been training separately because of a knee injury.

• Zhirkov came on as a substitute on Matchday 2, his first appearance since featuring for Russia in the UEFA Nations League on 14 October.

• Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro scored on his first appearance in UEFA club competition on Matchday 1.

• Lazio started the new season with a 2-0 win at Cagliari on 26 September but won none of their three subsequent Serie A matches, including heavy defeats against Atalanta (1-4) and Sampdoria (0-3), before a 2-1 success at home to Bologna on 24 October.

• On Sunday, added-time goals from substitutes Ciro Immobile and Felipe Caicedo earned Lazio a remarkable 4-3 Serie A win at Torino, their first away success in all competitions since that victory at Cagliari.

• Immobile, who scored 36 Serie A goals last season, started the new campaign with a goal on the opening day and got the first against Dortmund before scoring what proved to be the winner against Bologna. Sunday's goal means he has scored on his last three appearances.

• Manuel Lazzari, who failed to register in 32 league games last season, scored his first goal in Serie A for Lazio against Cagliari. He suffered a thigh injury while on international duty with Italy and returned as a substitute on 24 October.

• Immobile, Luis Alberto, Lazzari, Djavan Anderson, Lucas Leiva, Thomas Strakosha, Luiz Felipe and Andreas Pereira missed the game at Club Brugge through illness; Luiz Felipe, Pereira and substitutes Immobile and Leiva returned on Sunday, when Strakosha was an unused substitute.

• Lucas limped off shortly before half-time against Bologna, returning as a half-time substitute at Torino.

• Ştefan Radu has missed Lazio's last four games due to an injury to his right thigh.

• Gonzalo Escalante missed the games against Club Brugge and Torino with a thigh injury.

• Luiz Felipe made his first appearance this season on Matchday 1 having twisted his left ankle in September.

• Sergej Milinković-Savić scored Lazio's goal in a 1-1 draw against Inter on 4 October and also got both goals, including an extra-time winner, as Serbia triumphed 2-1 in Norway in the UEFA EURO 2020 play-off semi-finals on 8 October.

• Six days later, Milinković-Savić again found the net for Serbia, in a 2-2 UEFA Nations League draw against Turkey. He scored Lazio's second at Torino on Sunday, his first goal since then.

• Joaquín Correa scored the decisive goal as Argentina won 2-1 in Bolivia in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying on 13 October.

• On 28 September Luis Alberto renewed his contract with Lazio until 30 June 2025.

• Immobile had also signed a new contract until 2025 on 31 August.
