Match background Only this chapter

A surprise home defeat on Matchday 4 has left Sevilla bottom of Group F and in urgent need of a first victory as a revived Wolfsburg come to Spain.

• The reverse fixture in Germany on Matchday 2 ended 1-1, Ivan Rakitić's 87th-minute penalty for Sevilla cancelling out a Renato Steffen strike three minutes into the second half for a Wolfsburg side who lost Josuha Guilavogui to a second booking shortly before the equaliser.

• That was the one of three successive draws for Sevilla, who were held 1-1 at home by Salzburg on Matchday 1 and 0-0 at LOSC Lille on Matchday 3 before going down 2-1 at home against the French side last time out. In contrast, Wolfsburg picked up their first victory on Matchday 4 thanks to a 2-1 home defeat of Salzburg, giving them five points; they have also drawn 0-0 at LOSC and lost 3-1 in Austria.

• Wolfsburg cannot go through or be eliminated on Matchday 5 while Sevilla will be unable to finish in the top two if they lose, but could still qualify for the UEFA Europa League with a defeat if LOSC also lose at home to Salzburg.

Form guide
Sevilla
• Sevilla are in the UEFA Champions League group stage for the seventh time, and the fifth in the last seven seasons. They have qualified for the knockout phase in all but one of their participations.

• In 2020/21, Julen Lopetegui's team finished second in Group E behind eventual champions Chelsea, picking up 13 points – one fewer than the English club. Sevilla then lost to Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 (2-3 h, 2-2 a).

• Sevilla's wins in their first two home UEFA Champions League matches last season are their only victories in their last nine games in the competition at their own ground (D3 L4) with three defeats in their last four (D1).

• Fourth in Spain for the second season in a row in 2020/21, Sevilla won their section in each of their first two UEFA Champions League campaigns and, after finishing third in 2015/16 – when they went on to complete a hat-trick of UEFA Europa League wins – they have been group runners-up in their three most recent seasons in the competition.

• Sevilla have lost only six of their 26 games against German opposition (W12 D8) although they have been beaten in four of their last seven fixtures (D3). They lost 2-1 to Bayern München after extra time in the 2020 UEFA Super Cup in Budapest before last season's UEFA Champions League exit against Dortmund.

• The Spanish side were unbeaten in their first 11 home games against German visitors (W7 D4) but have lost the last two, against Bayern in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg (1-2) and Dortmund last season.

Wolfsburg
• Wolfsburg are making their third group stage appearance, after 2009/10 – when they failed to progress to the round of 16 – and 2015/16, when they reached the quarter-finals.

• The Wolves were first in their section six years ago, collecting 12 points from a group that also included Manchester United, PSV Eindhoven and CSKA Moskva. They beat Gent in the round of 16 (3-2 a, 1-0 h) before being thwarted by eventual winners Real Madrid in the last eight (2-0 h, 0-3 a).

• Wolfsburg have since featured in the UEFA Europa League twice; they were eliminated by Shakhtar Donetsk in the 2019/20 round of 16 (1-2 h, 0-3 a).

• In 2020/21, the German club were 4-0 winners at Albania's Kukës in the one-off second qualifying round before a 2-0 home victory against Desna Chernihiv; they then lost 2-1 at AEK Athens in their play-off.

• The German club have won two of their eight away games in the UEFA Champions League group stage (D1 L5).

• Wolfsburg were fourth in the 2020/21 Bundesliga, their highest finish since ending as runners-up in 2014/15.

• Wolfsburg's last game against a Spanish side before Matchday 2 was also their last in the UEFA Champions League before this season, the 3-0 loss at Real Madrid in the 2015/16 quarter-final second leg that confirmed a 3-2 aggregate defeat.

• That made Wolfsburg's record in Spain D1 L2. Overall against Spanish clubs it is W2 D2 L3 with 12 goals both scored and conceded.

Latest news

Sevilla
• Sevilla have lost only once in the Liga this season (W8 D4), winning four of their last six games and drawing the other two.

• It took a 92nd-minute Ivan Rakitić goal to prevent a second Liga defeat on Saturday, the Croatian midfielder rescuing a 2-2 draw at home to Alavés in a game in which Sevilla had trailed twice.

• Lucas Ocampos scored Sevilla's first goal at the weekend, making it three in his last four appearances.

• Marcos Acuña scored his first league goal of the season with the opener in a 2-0 derby victory at Real Betis on 7 November.

• A 2-0 home victory against Osasuna on 30 October was Julen Lopetegui's 50th in the Liga as Sevilla coach, in his 87th match (D21 D16); he is the fastest to the mark in the club's history, beating Manolo Jiménez's previous best of 91.

• Sevilla have suffered only two defeats this season in all competitions; a 1-0 Liga loss at Granada on 3 October and the 2-1 home reverse against LOSC Lille on Matchday 4. Their record otherwise is W8 D7.

• Karim Rekik has not played since Matchday 3, although he was an unused substitute against Alavés on Saturday.

• Youssef En-Nesyri has played only twice since 25 September, and not since 2 November, due to a muscular problem.

• Jesús Navas is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year by the quadriceps injury he suffered on Matchday 4.

Wolfsburg
• After eight games without a win in all competitions (D3 L5) Wolfsburg won three in a row under new coach Florian Kohfeldt before Saturday's 2-2 draw at Arminia Bielefeld, a match in which they had been two goals down.

• On 6 November Wolfsburg won 1-0 at Augsburg, Lukas Nmecha scoring the winner. He was also on target on Saturday, making it four goals in as many games.

• Wout Weghorst scored Wolfsburg's first goal on Saturday, his first in the league since 19 September.

• Having opened the league season with four victories, the Wolves had not won for five games, losing four in a row before winning 2-0 at Bayer Leverkusen on 30 October in what was their first game under Kohfeldt. The former Werder Bremen boss had been appointed four days earlier to succeed Mark van Bommel.

• Maximilian Arnold made his 260th Bundesliga appearance for Wolfsburg against Freiburg on 23 October, surpassing Diego Benaglio's club record. He scored the second goal in Leverkusen, his first since 19 February.

• On 11 November Ridle Baku scored his first goal for Germany in a 9-0 win against Liechtenstein in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying in Wolfsburg. Lukas Nmecha made his Germany debut as a second-half substitute and substitute Arnold won his second cap more than seven years after his first.

• Kevin Mbabu and substitute Renato Steffen helped Switzerland qualify for the World Cup with a 4-0 home victory against Bulgaria on 15 November; Steffen had started the 1-1 draw in Italy three days earlier.

• Luca Waldschmidt missed five successive games for Wolfsburg because of a thigh injury but was back on the bench on Saturday.

• Xaver Schlager has been out since 29 August with a knee injury.

• William, who suffered a knee injury on loan at Schalke at the beginning of May, returned to team training during the international break in October, but is facing another long spell on the sidelines having suffered another knee injury during his comeback in a friendly against 2. Bundesliga side Hansa Rostock on 10 November.

• Bartosz Białek has not played since 28 April because of a knee injury but returned to team training on 9 November.

• Schlager, William and Białek were all left out of Wolfsburg's UEFA Champions League squad.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Overall records
• Chelsea in 2012/13 are the only defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to CSKA Moskva.

• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose.

• Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successive titles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern München were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

• Bayern's victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020 UEFA Champions League final was their 11th successive win in the competition (18 September 2019 to 23 August 2020), setting a new record that they extended to 15 before being held at Atlético de Madrid on Matchday 5 in 2020/21. Bayern themselves (2 April 2013 to 27 November 2013) and Real Madrid (23 April 2014 to 18 February 2015) jointly held the previous best with ten, one more than Barcelona's winning run between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003.

Group stage
• Barcelona have finished as group winners on 21 occasions, four more than Real Madrid and Bayern München and six more than Manchester United. Barça also hold the record for the most unbeaten group stage campaigns with 13, five more than Real Madrid.

• Seven teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain (1994/95), Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage), Real Madrid (2011/12 and 2014/15) and Bayern (2019/20).

• Twenty-one teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most recently AEK Athens in 2018/19.

• In 2017/18, Paris Saint-Germain set a new group stage record by scoring 25 goals, one more than Bayern München managed in 2019/20. Liverpool are next on the list having scored 23 in 2017/18 with Borussia Dortmund hitting 21 in 2016/17. Manchester United (1998/99), Barcelona (2011/12, 2016/17) and Real Madrid (2013/14) all managed 20.

• Only Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05), Maccabi Haifa (2009/10) and Dinamo Zagreb (2016/17) have failed to score in a group stage.

• BATE Borisov conceded 24 goals in 2014/15, a new group stage record which was matched by Legia Warszawa in 2016/17. The previous mark, 22, was held by Dinamo Zagreb (2011/12) and Nordsjælland (2012/13).

• No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06), Manchester United (2010/11), Monaco (2014/15), Paris Saint-Germain (2015/16), Barcelona (2017/18) and Manchester City (2020/21) all let in just one.

• Matchday 6 of 2013/14 marked FCSB's 23rd successive game in the competition without a victory, surpassing the previous record of 22 set by Spartak Moskva between December 2000 and November 2006.

• Marseille hold the record for successive defeats in the competition, group stage to final, having lost 13 in a row between March 2012 and November 2020. The 2-0 loss at home to Porto on Matchday 4 of the 2020/21 competition surpassed Anderlecht's previous competition record of 12 losses in a row between December 2003 and November 2005. Dinamo Zagreb are next with 11 consecutive losses on two occasions, from September 2011 to November 2012 and September 2015 to December 2016.

• The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is six points: Zenit in 2013/14 and Roma in 2015/16. Since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, ten teams have made it through with seven points: Legia Warszawa (1995/96), Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Liverpool (2001/02, second group stage), Lokomotiv Moskva (2002/03, first group stage) and eventual finalists Juventus (2002/03, second group stage), Rangers and Werder Bremen (2005/06), Galatasaray (2013/14), Basel (2014/15) and Atalanta (2019/20).

• Napoli failed to qualify from their group with 12 points in 2013/14, the highest total of any team not to reach the next stage when the top two in each section progressed. Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000, second group stage), Borussia Dortmund (2002/03, second group stage), PSV Eindhoven (2003/04), Olympiacos and Dynamo Kyiv (both 2004/05), Werder Bremen (2006/07), Manchester City (2011/12), Chelsea and Cluj (both 2012/13), Benfica (2013/14), Porto (2015/16) and Ajax (2019/20) all missed out with ten points.

Goalscoring records
• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat matched by Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Fifteen more players, also including Messi and Robert Lewandowski twice, have scored four times in a game, most recently Sébastien Haller for Ajax at Sporting CP on Matchday 1 in 2021/22. That was the fifth quadruple in succession to be scored away from home after Bayern's Serge Gnabry and Lewandowski (group stage v Tottenham and Crvena zvezda respectively) and Josip Iličić (Atalanta v Valencia, round of 16 second leg) all achieved the feat in 2019/20 and Olivier Giroud did likewise for Chelsea at Sevilla in the 2020/21 group stage.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, Messi got ten goals in 2016/17, a figure matched by Robert Lewandowski in 2019/20; Ronaldo (2013/14, 2017/18) and Luiz Adriano (2014/15) scored nine while Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi, Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03), Lewandowski (2018/19) and Erling Braut Haaland (2019/20) all managed eight.

• Messi's hat-trick against PSV Eindhoven on Matchday 1 of the 2018/19 competition was his eighth in the competition, a mark Ronaldo matched against Atlético de Madrid in that season's round of 16 second leg.

Oldest and youngest players
• Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid on Matchday 6 in 2007/08 aged 43 years 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens in 2006/07.

• Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years 59 days, in Roma's 1-1 draw at CSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years 290 days) was the previous record holder.

• Youssoufa Moukoko is the youngest player to have appeared, aged 16 years 18 days for Borussia Dortmund at Zenit on 8 December 2020. He replaced Celestine Babayaro, who was 16 years 87 days when he started for Anderlecht against Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994; Babayaro was sent off in the 37th minute.

• Ansu Fati's winner for Barcelona at Inter on Matchday 6 in 2019/20 made him the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Champions League history, at the age of 17 years 40 days. He eclipsed the previous record of Olympiacos's Peter Ofori-Quaye (17 years 195 days) that had lasted since 1 October 1997.
