Match background Only this chapter

With defeats in their opening two UEFA Europa Conference League Group G fixtures, Slovenian champions Mura need to turn the tide as they host a Rennes side who have made an encouraging start to the section.

• While Mura have so far struggled to make headway on their maiden group stage appearance, losing 0-2 at home to Vitesse and 1-5 against Tottenham Hotspur in London, Rennes have four points on the board, three of them from a 2-1 win in Arnhem on Matchday 2 that followed an opening 2-2 draw at home to Spurs.

Previous meetings
• This is Mura's first UEFA encounter with a team from France and Rennes' first against Slovenian opponents.

Form guide
Mura
• Champions of Slovenia for the first time in 2020/21, Mura are competing in Europe for the third straight season but had never previously made it through to a group stage.

• After winning their maiden UEFA Champions League tie 6-0 on aggregate against Shkëndija of North Macedonia (1-0 a, 5-0 h), Mura were eliminated in the second qualifying round by Ludogorets (0-0 h, 1-3 a). They then edged past Žalgiris Vilnius in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round (0-0 h, 1-0 a) before biting the dust in the play-offs against Sturm Graz (1-3 h, 0-2 a) – a result that transported them into the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage.

• Mura's home record in UEFA competition is W2 D2 L4, with no wins in the last four matches and defeats in each of the last two.

Rennes
• Rennes' sixth-placed finish in last season's Ligue 1 enabled them to become France's first representatives in the UEFA Europa Conference League. The Brittany club are competing in a European group stage for the fourth straight year, a 2020/21 UEFA Champions League adventure following back-to-back UEFA Europa League campaigns.

• Bottom of their UEFA Champions League group, which contained Krasnodar and Sevilla as well as eventual winners Chelsea, Rennes ensured another autumn of continental football as Bruno Génésio's side comfortably accounted for Rosenborg in their UEFA Europa Conference League play-off (2-0 h, 3-1 a).

• Rennes' 3-1 win at Rosenborg ended a run of seven successive away defeats in Europe, but the Matchday 2 success at Vitesse has given them back-to-back European away wins for only the second time; they have never registered three in a row.

Links and trivia
• Rennes' Croatian midfielder Lovro Majer was in his country's Under-21 squad for this years' European Championship in Slovenia and Hungary, making three appearances including a start against Spain in the quarter-final in Maribor (1-2 aet).

• Rennes are the only one of last season's 32 UEFA Champions League participants to be involved in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League group stage.

• Mura are one of eight clubs making their debut appearance in a UEFA group stage this season; the others – one in each group – are Alashkert (Group A), Flora Tallinn (B), Bodø/Glimt (C), Randers (D), Union Berlin (E), Lincoln Red Imps (F) and Kairat (H).

• Although Mura are in uncharted European waters, their head coach Ante Šimundža was in charge of the Maribor side that qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2014/15.
