Match background Only this chapter

The two frontrunners in UEFA Europa Conference League Group C meet on Matchday 3 as Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt welcome José Mourinho's Roma to the Arctic Circle hoping to leapfrog them to the top of the table.

• Bodø/Glimt have made a bright start to their first UEFA group campaign, beating Zorya Luhansk 3-1 at home before drawing 0-0 at CSKA-Sofia. Roma are two points ahead of them, scoring eight goals in their first two matches – the highest tally in the competition – in seeing off CSKA 5-1 at home and Zorya 3-0 away.

Previous meetings
• Although this is their first meeting with Roma, Bodø/Glimt have faced Italian opposition on seven previous occasions, losing six of the games and winning the other – 3-2 against Sampdoria in Oslo in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round first leg, a tie they lost 4-3 on aggregate. Last season they gave AC Milan a tough test in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, losing 3-2 at San Siro in the one-off tie.

• Roma's one previous UEFA encounter with a Norwegian club also took place in the Arctic Circle, yielding a 2-1 win against Tromsø in the opening game of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage.

Form guide
Bodø/Glimt
• Champions of Norway for the first time in 2020, when they stormed to victory by 19 points, Bodø/Glimt are making their debut in a UEFA group stage. This season's European campaign, in which this is their 11th match, is already the longest in the club's history.

• After concluding their first European adventure for 16 years with that defeat by Milan, Kjetil Knudsen's side lost this season's UEFA Champions League first qualifying round tie to Legia Warszawa (2-3 h, 0-2 a), but subsequently eliminated Valur (3-0 a, 3-0 h), Prishtina (1-2 a, 2-0 h) and Žalgiris Vilnius (2-2 a, 1-0 h) to reach the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage.

• The Norwegian title holders have won seven of the nine European home games they have played this century (D1 L1), including four out of four in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Roma
• Roma finished seventh in Serie A last season, 29 points behind champions Inter, to become Italy's first UEFA Europa Conference League representatives. After topping their 2020/21 UEFA Europa League group, which also included Young Boys and CFR Cluj, Paulo Fonseca's side eliminated Braga, Shakhtar and Ajax in the knockout phase, only to fall to Manchester United in the semi-finals.

• Now led by another Portuguese coach, Mourinho, Roma won both legs of their UEFA Europa Conference League play-off, 2-1 away and 3-0 at home to Trabzonspor.

• Defeated 6-2 at Old Trafford in the first leg of last season's UEFA Europa League semi-final, Roma have nevertheless won seven of their last nine European away matches, the other defeat in that spell coming at CSKA-Sofia (1-3) in their final group fixture last term when they had already clinched top spot. They have won their last five European games, home and away, scoring 16 goals and conceding four.

Links and trivia
• On the last occasion that Mourinho coached a team against Norwegian opposition his Chelsea side drew 1-1 at home to Rosenborg on Matchday 1 of the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League in what proved the last match of his first spell in charge of the London club.

• At the 2018 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Finland an Italy side including Roma's Nicolò Zaniolo drew 1-1 with a Norway team that featured Bodø/Glimt's Erik Botheim and Hugo Vetlesen. Zaniolo provided the assist for the late equaliser that cancelled out Erling Haaland's penalty, clinched top spot for Italy and knocked Norway out.

• Bodø/Glimt are one of eight clubs making their debut appearance in a UEFA group stage this season; the others – one in each group – are Alashkert (Group A), Flora Tallinn (B), Randers (D), Union Berlin (E), Lincoln Red Imps (F), Mura (G) and Kairat (H).
