Match background Only this chapter

Victory is imperative for both Maccabi Haifa and Union Berlin if they are to make further progress in the UEFA Europa Conference League as they meet on Matchday 5 in northern Israel.

• The Israeli champions traded 1-0 home wins with Slavia Praha on Matchdays 3 and 4 but sit third in Group E on four points, two fewer than the Czech side and one more than Union, beaten twice by section leaders Feyenoord (1-3 a, 1-2 h) in their last two matches.

• Defeat for either Maccabi or Union will end their hopes of qualifying for the knockout phase, as will a draw should Slavia beat Feyenoord at home in the other Matchday 5 encounter.

Previous meetings
• Union's first UEFA match against Israeli opposition, against Maccabi on Matchday 2, produced the German club's joint biggest European home win as they claimed their only points of the section so far in a 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Andreas Voglsammer, Kevin Behrens and Taiwo Awoniyi.

• That stretched Maccabi's run of defeats by German clubs in UEFA encounters to seven out of seven, all in group stage football. They have failed to score in all three previous home fixtures, although only one took place in Haifa – the most recent, 0-3 against Schalke on Matchday 6 of the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League.

Form guide
Maccabi
• Maccabi won their first Israeli league title in a decade last season – and 13th in all – to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, but it was there that their campaign ended, with a 3-1 aggregate defeat by Kairat Almaty (1-1 h, 0-2 a). Barak Bakhar's side made amends, however, by romping through the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying phase, where they overwhelmed the champions of Georgia (Dinamo Tbilisi 7-2 on aggregate), the Faroe Islands (HB Tórshavn 7-3 agg) and Azerbaijan (Neftçi 7-3 agg) to reach the group stage.

• This is Maccabi's first appearance in a UEFA group stage since 2013/14, and their sixth in total. Only once have they made further progress, in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup, when they advanced to the round of 16. Their most successful European campaign was in 1998/99, when they reached the quarter-finals of the last ever UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

• Maccabi are undefeated in their last 13 European home games, winning nine, and scored 16 goals in Haifa during the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying phase before drawing a blank on Matchday 1 in a goalless draw with Feyenoord. They have yet to concede at home in Group E.

Union
• Seventh in the 2020/21 German top flight with 50 points at the end of only their second Bundesliga campaign, both under Urs Fischer – the Swiss coach who had masterminded their historic promotion – Union thus returned to Europe for the first time in 20 years, their sole previous continental adventure, in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup, having ended in the second round.

• Union secured a first appearance in a European group stage by winning their UEFA Europa Conference League play-off against Finnish side KuPS (4-0 a, 0-0 h) and thus becoming the new competition's first German group stage participants.

• Union were unbeaten in their first three European away matches, two draws in 2001/02 supplemented by this season's 4-0 win at KuPS, before losing both Group E games 3-1, the first at Slavia on Matchday 1.

Links and trivia
• This is Union boss Fischer's 50th UEFA club competition encounter as a head coach.

• Maccabi striker Ben Sahar played for Union's city rivals Hertha Berlin from July 2012 to January 2014. He also had a loan spell at Arminia Bielefeld.

• Other Maccabi players to have played for German clubs are Taleb Tawatha (Eintracht Frankfurt 2016–19), José Rodríguez (Mainz 2016/17) and Godsway Donyoh (Dynamo Dresden 2020 loan).

• Tawatha played at Frankfurt alongside Union's Bastian Oczipka (2016/17) and Frederik Rønnow (2018/19), with Levin Öztunali a team-mate of Rodríguez at Mainz.

• Maccabi have scored just one goal in their first four UEFA Europa Conference League group games – the joint lowest tally in the competition alongside CSKA-Sofia (Group C) and CFR Cluj (D). In contrast their domestic rivals Maccabi Tel-Aviv are the highest-scoring team with 13 goals in Group A.

• Union are one of eight clubs making their debut appearance in a UEFA group stage this season; the others – one in each group – are Alashkert (Group A), Flora Tallinn (B), Bodø/Glimt (C), Randers (D), Lincoln Red Imps (F), Mura (G) and Kairat (H).
