Match background Only this chapter

Defeated 1-0 at Slavia Praha on the opening night of Group C, Bordeaux will aim to get their UEFA Europa League campaign back on track at home to an FC København side that drew their matchday one fixture 1-1 at home to Zenit.

Previous meetings
• Bordeaux's sole previous fixture against Danish opposition came in the 1995 UEFA Intertoto Cup, a 4-0 home win against Odense helping them on the road to a memorable European campaign that would end in the UEFA Cup final.

• FCK are yet to win in four trips to France (D1 L3), suffering their joint heaviest European defeat on the first of those visits and in only their second European tie, 5-0 at Auxerre in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup.

Form guide
Bordeaux
• Sixth in Ligue 1 last season, Bordeaux negotiated three qualifying ties in order to reach the UEFA Europa League proper. They did so in some style and unbeaten, winning home and away against Ventspils and Mariupol before seeing off Gent 2-0 on aggregate (0-0 away, 2-0 home) in the play-offs.

Highlights: Slavia Praha 1-0 Bordeaux

• Bordeaux have participated in three previous UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns, reaching the round of 16 in 2012/13 but finishing bottom of their section in both 2013/14 and 2015/16. Last season they were eliminated in the third qualifying round on away goals by Hungary's Videoton.

• Bordeaux have won their last four home games in Europe, all in the qualifying phase. They are without a UEFA Europa League group stage win in four matches on French soil (D2 L2) and have lost four of their last seven home games in the competition proper (W1 D2).

København
• FCK were dethroned as Danish champions last season, missing out on a third successive title and ensuring an 18th successive European campaign only after a post-season play-off win. They are one of only four clubs to have reached this season's UEFA Europa League group stage after beginning their campaign in the first qualifying round, the other three being Apollon Limassol, Rangers and Sarpsborg. A penalty shoot-out win took them past Atalanta after two goalless draws in the play-offs.

• The Danish club are taking part in a sixth UEFA Europa League group stage and have progressed twice before, most recently last season when they lost in the round of 32 to eventual winners Atlético Madrid (1-4 home, 0-1 away). They had gone a round further in 2016/17 after crossing over from the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Highlights: København 1-1 Zenit

• København have won three and drawn one of their four away games in this European campaign, conceding only one goal in the process. There have been no away wins, however, in the UEFA Europa League proper since they prevailed 2-1 at Ludogorets in the 2016/17 round of 32 – a run of five matches (D2 L3).

Links and trivia
• Bordeaux's on-loan Copenhagen-born striker Andreas Cornelius has spent the bulk of his career with FCK, scoring 62 goals in 176 appearances for the club.

• This is Ståle Solbakken's 28th match as FCK coach in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final. Only four other coaches have taken charge of more games in the competition with one club – Unai Emery (Sevilla, 39), Jorge Jesus (Benfica, 38), Kurban Berdyev (Rubin, 32) and Fred Rutten (PSV Eindhoven, 29).

The coaches
• Éric Bedouet has a lengthy association with the Girondins, having first served on the club's coaching staff in the title-winning 1998/99 campaign. Widely recognised as one of the most accomplished fitness trainers in France, he also served the national team at UEFA EURO 2016. After standing in as Bordeaux's interim coach twice in 2018, following the departures of Jocelyn Gourvennec and Gus Poyet, he was confirmed as head coach on 5 September – the same day Ricardo Gomes was named as the club's new general manager.

• Solbakken's second coaching tenure at København began in 2013. He has won seven Danish titles in charge of FCK, five of those in his first spell from 2006 to 2011. The former Norway midfielder won 58 caps and scored nine goals for his country, appearing at both the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000, and had short spells coaching in Germany (with Köln) and England (with Wolves) in between his two lengthy stints in the Danish capital.
