Match background Only this chapter

Two teams who have enjoyed a strong start to 2020/21, remaining unbeaten in all competitions, lock horns as Group H leaders AC Milan entertain second-placed LOSC Lille at San Siro.

• The Serie A front-runners head the standings after beating Celtic 3-1 in Glasgow and Sparta Praha 3-0 in Milan, a penalty miss by Zlatan Ibrahimović in the second game proving inconsequential thanks to goals from Iberian trio Brahim Díaz, Rafael Leão and Diogo Dalot. LOSC beat Sparta 4-1 away on Matchday 1 before coming from behind to draw 2-2 with Celtic at the Stade Pierre Mauroy thanks to second-half strikes from Zeki Çelik and Jonathan Ikoné.

Previous meetings
• LOSC got the better of Milan the one previous time the clubs were paired together in European competition, drawing 0-0 at home and winning 2-0 away in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group stage, but while both clubs went through to the knockout phase it was the Italian side who went on to win the competition, beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final.

• Milan have a 50% win ratio against French opposition, prevailing in 12 of their 24 matches with six draws and six defeats. At home their record is W8 D3 L1, with LOSC the only visiting team to record a victory. The Rossoneri's last European home game against Ligue 1 opponents was a 2-0 success against Auxerre in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage, Ibrahimović scoring both goals as well as the opener in the 2-0 away win that followed.

• LOSC won their first three UEFA matches in Italy, the third of those against Milan, but have lost the last two, most recently going down 2-1 to Internazionale at San Siro in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage.

Form guide
Milan
• A sixth-placed finish in Serie A last term earned Milan a return to Europe after a one-season absence. Stefano Pioli's side beat Shamrock Rovers (2-0 a) and runaway Norwegian league leaders Bodø/Glimt (3-2 h) in their first two qualifying matches before dramatically capturing a place in the UEFA Europa League group stage by ousting Rio Ave 9-8 in a marathon penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in Portugal.

• This is the seven-time European champions' third appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage, all in the last four seasons. They topped their group in 2017/18 before advancing into the round of 16, where they were convincingly defeated by Arsenal (0-2 h, 1-3 a), but in 2018/19 they could only finish third in their section, eliminated by Olympiacos and Real Betis. It was the first time the Rossoneri had failed to qualify from their group in a UEFA competition since the second group stage of the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League, ending a sequence of 14 straight successes.

• Milan's home record in the UEFA Europa League, qualifiers included, is W9 D1 L2. In the group stage it is W5 D1 L1, with the five wins all coming on Matchdays 2 and 5.

LOSC
• LOSC are back in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the fourth time thanks to the fourth place they occupied when last season's Ligue 1 campaign ended in March. Christophe Galtier's side also competed in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League, finishing bottom of a group containing Chelsea, Valencia and Ajax.

• The club from northern France last participated in the UEFA Europa League group stage in 2014/15, when they failed to win a game (D4 L2). Their other two group campaigns, in 2009/10 and 2010/11, were more successful as they reached the knockout phase on both occasions.

• Les Dogues had gone a remarkable 17 European games without a win until they beat Sparta 4-1 in Prague on Matchday 1 – their first victory in nine continental matches on the road (D2 L6). In the UEFA Europa League group stage their away record is now W2 D4 L4.

Links and trivia
• Portuguese striker Rafael Leão played for LOSC in 2018/19, scoring eight goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches, before joining Milan. His compatriot Tiago Djaló moved in the opposite direction as part of the transfer.

• Another Milan player who has played for LOSC is Danish defender Simon Kjær, who spent two seasons in Lille from 2013 to 2015, making 66 Ligue 1 appearances and scoring one goal.

• Ibrahimović spent four hugely successful years in France with Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 156 goals for the club, three of those against LOSC.

• Milan's Ciprian Tătăruşanu (Nantes 2017–19, Lyon 2019/20), Pierre Kalulu (Lyon B 2018–20) and Ismaël Bennacer (Arles 2013–15, Tours 2017) have also played in France.

• Ante Rebić (Milan) and Domagoj Bradarić (LOSC) are fellow Croatian internationals.

• LOSC's Timothy Weah is the son of Milan legend and two-time Serie A champion George Weah.

• Milan are one of six former European Cup winners in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage, the others being Benfica (Group D), PSV Eindhoven (E), Feyenoord (K) Crvena zvezda (L) and Group H rivals Celtic.

• LOSC's fourth participation in the UEFA Europa League group stage matches the French record jointly held by Bordeaux, Marseille and St-Étienne.
