Match background Only this chapter

Celtic take on Sparta Praha for the first time with both sides knowing that a Group H victory is paramount if they are to maintain their ambitions of reaching the UEFA Europa League knockout phase.

• The Scottish champions were beaten 3-1 at home by AC Milan on Matchday 1, and although they drew 2-2 at Ligue 1 high fliers LOSC Lille a week later, they surrendered a two-goal lead provided by Mohamed Elyounoussi's spectacular first-half double. They still boast one point more than Sparta, who, having conceded seven goals already, have the worst record of all 48 group stage participants after Matchday 2 following their defeats by LOSC – 1-4 in Prague – and Milan – 0-3 in northern Italy.

Previous meetings
• Celtic have won their two previous home games against Czech visitors, most recently beating Teplice 3-0 in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup third round first leg. The 1-0 defeat in the return is their only loss against Czech opposition.

• Sparta have won their last two matches in Scotland after losing the first. They were 2-0 winners at Hearts in the most recent fixture, in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup first round, a subsequent goalless draw in Prague taking them through to the group stage.

Form guide
Celtic
• Celtic were declared Scottish champions for the ninth year in a row last season – and 51st time in all – despite the Premiership being called off in March. A 16-match European campaign that started in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round ended in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, where, after topping their group for the first time, they were knocked out by Copenhagen.

• This term Celtic failed to negotiate the UEFA Champions League qualifying phase for the third successive summer, losing 1-2 at home to Ferencváros in the second qualifying round, but 1-0 away wins at Riga and Sarejevo put Neil Lennon's side into the UEFA Europa League group stage. This is the tenth successive season that the club are competing in a UEFA group stage and their seventh autumn series in the UEFA Europa League, three of their six previous participations having continued into the round of 32 – though never further.

• There were three wins out of three for Celtic at home in last season's group stage, against CFR Cluj (2-0), Lazio (2-1) and Rennes (3-1). However, their last two UEFA Europa League fixtures in Glasgow, against Copenhagen and Milan, have both resulted in 3-1 defeats.

Sparta
• Sparta won the 2019/20 Czech Cup, beating Slovan Liberec 2-1 in the final, to qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage, where they are appearing for the seventh time, the first under new coach Václav Kotal. They have made it through to the knockout phase in four of their previous six participations, reaching the quarter-finals in 2015/16.

• This is the club's 38th successive European campaign but their first in a group stage since 2016/17, when they finished top of a UEFA Europa League section containing Hapoel Beer-Sheva, Southampton and Inter before going out in the round of 32 to Rostov (0-4 a, 1-1 h). Since then Sparta have been eliminated on entry in the UEFA Europa League qualifying phase three summers running, going out last season to Trabzonspor in the second qualifying round (2-2 h, 1-2 a).

• Sparta are on a run of six successive European away defeats and have recorded just one victory in their last 11 matches outside the Czech Republic (D1 L9). Their away record in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W5 D5 L9.

Links and trivia
• Sparta's Swedish midfielder David Moberg-Karlsson spent the second half of 2013/14 on loan at Kilmarnock and played in a 0-3 home defeat by Celtic.

• Elyounoussi and Sparta's Andreas Vindheim have played together for Norway Under-21s.

• Sparta defender Ondřej Čelůstka was a recent visitor to Glasgow, starting for Czech Republic against Scotland at Hampden Park in the UEFA Nations League on 14 October but having to go off injured after just 20 minutes. The home side, featuring Celtic's Greg Taylor and Callum McGregor, went on to win 1-0.

• Celtic are one of six former European Cup winners in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage, the others being Benfica (Group D), PSV Eindhoven (E), Feyenoord (K) Crvena zvezda (L) and Group H rivals Milan.

• Sparta's seventh appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage is the most made by a Czech club.
