Match background Only this chapter

Surprise 3-0 winners at San Siro last time out, when they subjected AC Milan to the heaviest home defeat in their long European history, LOSC Lille have leapfrogged the Serie A front-runners but will need to end a long winless home run in Europe if they are to complete a famous double over the Italian giants.

• Turkish international Yusuf Yazıcı was the hero for LOSC in Milan, scoring his second successive away hat-trick in the group stage – after a similar feat on Matchday 1 at Sparta Praha – to inflict a first defeat of the season on their hosts, who had scored three goals themselves in each of their opening two Group H victories. The French club now lead the standings on seven points, one more than Milan, four above third-placed Sparta, and six ahead of Celtic.

Previous meetings
• LOSC also got the better of Milan the one previous time the clubs were paired together in European competition, drawing 0-0 at home and winning 2-0 away in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group stage, but while both clubs went through to the knockout phase it was the Italian side who went on to win the competition, beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final.

• LOSC have a positive overall balance against Italian clubs in UEFA competition of W6 D1 L4, but they have won only two of the five home games (D1 L2), most recently losing 0-1 to Milan's city rivals Internazionale in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage.

• Milan's away record against French clubs is W4 D3 L4 with victories on each of their last two visits, the most recent a 2-0 success at Auxerre in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage, Zlatan Ibrahimović scoring the opening goal.

• The Rossoneri's most famous encounter with French opposition outside Italy was the inaugural UEFA Champions League final of 1992/93, which they lost 1-0 to Marseille in Munich.

Form guide
LOSC
• LOSC are back in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the fourth time thanks to the fourth place they occupied when last season's Ligue 1 campaign ended in March. Christophe Galtier's side also competed in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League, finishing bottom of a group containing Chelsea, Valencia and Ajax.

• The club from northern France last participated in the UEFA Europa League group stage in 2014/15, when they failed to win a game (D4 L2). Their other two group campaigns, in 2009/10 and 2010/11, were more successful as they reached the knockout phase on both occasions.

• Les Dogues are without a win in 13 European home matches (D6 L7) and have registered just eight goals over that stretch, two of them in the 2-2 draw against Celtic on Matchday 2. Although their all-time home record in the UEFA Europa League proper is W6 D5 L2, the last of those victories dates back almost a decade to Matchday 6 of their domestic double-winning 2010/11 season, when they beat Gent 3-0.

Milan
• A sixth-placed finish in Serie A last term earned Milan a return to Europe after a one-season absence. Stefano Pioli's side beat Shamrock Rovers (2-0 a) and runaway Norwegian league leaders Bodø/Glimt (3-2 h) in their first two qualifying matches before dramatically capturing a place in the UEFA Europa League group stage by ousting Rio Ave 9-8 in a marathon penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in Portugal.

• This is the seven-time European champions' third appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage, all in the last four seasons. They topped their group in 2017/18 before advancing into the round of 16, where they were convincingly defeated by Arsenal (0-2 h, 1-3 a), but in 2018/19 they could only finish third in their section, eliminated by Olympiacos and Real Betis. It was the first time the Rossoneri had failed to qualify from their group in a UEFA competition since the second group stage of the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League, ending a sequence of 14 straight successes.

• Milan's away record in the UEFA Europa League, qualifiers included, is W7 D3 L3. In the group stage it is W3 D2 L2, the three wins all coming on Matchday 1, including this season at Celtic (3-1), and the two draws both on Matchday 4.

Links and trivia
• Portuguese striker Rafael Leão played for LOSC in 2018/19, scoring eight goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches, before joining Milan. His compatriot Tiago Djaló moved in the opposite direction as part of the transfer.

• Another ex-LOSC player in the Milan squad is Danish defender Simon Kjær, who spent two seasons in Lille from 2013 to 2015, making 66 Ligue 1 appearances and scoring once.

• Ibrahimović spent four hugely successful years in France with Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 156 goals for the club, three of those against LOSC.

• Milan's Ciprian Tătăruşanu (Nantes 2017–19, Lyon 2019/20), Pierre Kalulu (Lyon B 2018–20) and Ismaël Bennacer (Arles 2013–15, Tours 2017) have also played in France.

• Domagoj Bradarić (LOSC) and Ante Rebić (Milan) are fellow Croatian internationals.

• LOSC's Timothy Weah is the son of Milan legend and two-time Serie A champion George Weah.

• Yusuf Yazıcı is the leading scorer in this season’s UEFA Europa League group stage with six goals, two more than any other player.

• Milan are one of six former European Cup winners in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage, the others being Benfica (Group D), PSV Eindhoven (E), Feyenoord (K) Crvena zvezda (L) and Group H rivals Celtic.

• LOSC's fourth participation in the UEFA Europa League group stage matches the French record jointly held by Bordeaux, Marseille and St-Étienne.
