Match background Only this chapter

Without a point from their opening three Group L fixtures, Gent are in urgent need of a win as they play host to a Crvena zvezda side that got the better of them in Belgrade on Matchday 3.

• The Serbian champions followed up a 5-1 home success against Slovan Liberec by beating Gent 2-1 at the Stadion Rajko Mitić on 5 November. Guélor Kanga gave Crvena zvezda an early lead that Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe cancelled out before Aleksandar Katai struck a 59th-minute winner to inflict a third successive defeat on the Belgian side following their losses against Liberec (0-1 a) and section leaders Hoffenheim (1-4 h).

Previous meetings
• While Gent had never faced Serbian opposition until Matchday 3, Crvena zvezda have taken on Belgian teams eight times in the past, all in the 1980s and '90s. Their four games in Belgium all ended in defeat, most recently 3-2 at Germinal Ekeren in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round with current Crvena zvezda coach Dejan Stanković scoring the visitors' second goal.

Form guide
Gent
• Runners-up in the abbreviated 2019/20 Belgian First Division A behind Club Brugge, Gent also reached the UEFA Europa League round of 32, where they went out to Roma (0-1 a, 1-1 h) having come through three qualifying rounds before finishing top of a section including Wolfsburg, St-Étienne and Olexandriya.

• Gent are competing in Europe for the sixth successive season, extending the longest sequence in the club's history. They entered the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League under new coach Wim De Decker in the third qualifying round, where they overcame Rapid Wien 2-1 at home, but were then beaten home and away by Dynamo Kyiv in the play-offs (1-2 h, 0-3 a), which booked them a fourth participation in the UEFA Europa League group stage. They have reached the knockout phase twice, in 2016/17 and last season, having missed the cut on their first appearance in 2010/11.

• Gent were undefeated in 13 European home games against foreign opposition (W8 D5), winning five out of seven last season, before the recent losses against Dynamo Kyiv and Hoffenheim, the latter defeat only their second in ten UEFA Europa League group stage home matches (W5 D3).

Crvena zvezda
• The 2019/20 season brought Crvena zvezda their 30th national title, completing a hat-trick of Serbian Super Liga successes. The Belgrade giants reached the UEFA Champions League group stage for the second successive season, again finishing in fourth place, behind Bayern München, Tottenham Hotspur and Olympiacos.

• The 1990/91 European champions' bid to return to the UEFA Champions League group stage this season under new head coach Stanković ended in the third qualifying round with a penalty shoot-out defeat in Cyprus against Omonoia, but a 2-1 win at Ararat-Armenia in the UEFA Europa League play-offs ensured a fourth successive autumn of European group stage football. In 2017/18 Crvena zvezda reached the UEFA Europa League proper for the first time and finished runners-up in their group to Arsenal before losing to CSKA Moskva (0-0 h, 0-1 a) in the round of 32.

• Crvena zvezda posted clean sheets in all three of their away fixtures in the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League group stage (W1 D2), but their seven group games on the road since then, six in the UEFA Champions League plus the Matchday 1 fixture at Hoffenheim (0-2), have all ended in defeat, with 29 goals conceded and just two scored.

Links and trivia
• Milan Borjan, Crvena zvezda's Canadian goalkeeper, is one appearance short of his 50th in UEFA club competition.

• Crvena zvezda striker El Fardou Ben Nabouhane and Gent skipper Odjidja-Ofoe were team-mates at Olympiacos in the first half of 2017/18.

• Crvena zvezda are one of six former European Cup winners in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage, the others being Benfica (Group D), PSV Eindhoven (E), Celtic and AC Milan (H), and Feyenoord (K).
