Match background Only this chapter

Though defeated twice without scoring in their two Group A encounters with Roma, CFR Cluj still have qualification in their own hands as they host already-eliminated CSKA-Sofia, who have yet to register a goal in the section.

• Beaten 5-0 by the group leaders in Rome and 2-0 in Romania, CFR will nevertheless guarantee further progress alongside the Serie A side if they win their final two matches, the second of them away to Young Boys, who have seven points from their four games, three more than CFR. CSKA, with just one point, can no longer finish in the top two.

Previous meetings
• New ground was broken by both clubs in the Bulgarian capital on Matchday 1 as it was CSKA-Sofia's first UEFA meeting with a club from Romania and CFR's first against opposition from Bulgaria. The visitors won the game 2-0, second-half goals from Mário Rondón and Ciprian Deac (penalty) bringing them only a second away win in the UEFA Europa League proper.

Form guide
CFR
• CFR completed a hat-trick of Romanian league titles in 2019/20, making it six in all, while also enjoying a club-record 16-match European campaign that began in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round and ended in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, where they provided stiff opposition for Sevilla, going out to the eventual winners only on the away goals rule (1-1 h, 0-0 a).

• Having lost seven of their first eight fixtures in the UEFA Europa League proper, in 2009/10 and 2012/13, CFR recorded 12 points to finish runners-up in their group last season behind Celtic. Ousted from this season's UEFA Champions League on penalties by Dinamo Zagreb in the second qualifying round after a 2-2 home draw, they subsequently beat the champions of Sweden (Djurgården 1-0 away) and Finland (KuPS 3-1 at home) to reach the UEFA Europa League group stage for the third time.

• CFR were unbeaten in seven European home games (W4 D3) until they lost to Roma last time out. They won all three in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage, against Lazio (2-1), Rennes (1-0) and Celtic (2-0), before drawing 1-1 against Young Boys on Matchday 2.

CSKA
• CSKA finished runners-up last season in both the Bulgarian league – to serial champions Ludogorets – and the domestic cup, losing on penalties to Lokomotiv Plovdiv after a goalless final. In Europe they fell in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League for the second successive season, going down 2-1 on aggregate to Zorya Luhansk (1-1 h, 0-1 a).

• This term, under former coach Stamen Belchev, CSKA won four qualifying games in a row – against Sirens of Malta (2-1 h), BATE Borisov of Belarus (2-0 h), B36 of the Faroe Islands (2-0 h) and, most memorably, 3-1 away to Basel – to reach the UEFA Europa League group stage for the first time.

• CSKA's victory at Basel was one of only two wins in their nine European away matches (D2 L5). It was also the only one of the last six matches outside Bulgaria in which they have scored, their two Group A games on the road this term having resulted in a 0-0 draw at Roma and 0-3 defeat at Young Boys.

Links and trivia
• CFR's Rondón and CSKA's Adalberto Peñaranda are both Venezuelan internationals.

• CFR coach Dan Petrescu played twice for Romania against Bulgaria, losing both matches – 0-3 at home in a EURO '92 qualifier and 0-1 at EURO '96.

• CSKA are one of six group stage debutants in this season's UEFA Europa League – alongside Granada and Omonoia (both E), Leicester City (G), Sivasspor (I) and Royal Antwerp (J).

• CSKA, who appointed Bruno Akrapović as their new head coach ahead of Matchday 4, are the only one of the 48 teams in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage yet to score a goal after four matches.
