Match background Only this chapter

CSKA-Sofia will be eager to avoid becoming the first club to complete a UEFA Europa League group stage without scoring as they take on Group A winners Roma in the Bulgarian capital.

• CSKA claimed a 0-0 draw last time out at CFR Cluj but are still certain to finish fourth while Roma, who sealed their qualification on Matchday 4, clinched first place a week later by coming from behind to beat Young Boys 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico with goals from Borja Mayoral, Riccardo Calafiori – his first in Europe – and substitute Edin Džeko – his 42nd in UEFA club competition.

Previous meetings
• The clubs' first meeting, at the Stadio Olimpico on Matchday 2, ended in a goalless draw. Those are the only points dropped so far by Roma in the group.

• Roma have now won five of their seven matches against Bulgarian teams, including two out of three in Bulgaria, both in Sofia. The only goal they have conceded in those seven games came in their sole defeat, 0-1 at Dunav Ruse in the second leg of their 1975/76 UEFA Cup first round tie – though Roma progressed 2-1 on aggregate.

Form guide
CSKA
• CSKA finished runners-up last season in both the Bulgarian league – to serial champions Ludogorets – and the domestic cup, losing on penalties to Lokomotiv Plovdiv after a goalless final. In Europe they fell in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League for the second successive season, going down 2-1 on aggregate to Zorya Luhansk (1-1 h, 0-1 a).

• This term, under former coach Stamen Belchev, CSKA won four qualifying games in a row – against Sirens of Malta (2-1 h), BATE Borisov of Belarus (2-0 h), B36 of the Faroe Islands (2-0 h) and, most memorably, 3-1 away to Basel – to reach the UEFA Europa League group stage for the first time.

• Although CSKA have lost both Group A home games – 0-2 against CFR Cluj and 0-1 against Young Boys – they have been defeated in just three of their 11 European home games, seven of them ending in victory including all three in this season's qualifying phase.

Roma
• Roma finished fifth in Serie A last term to qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage for the second season running and fourth time in all. Paulo Fonseca's side were defeated 2-0 by eventual winners Sevilla in last season's round of 16, which remains the furthest the club has gone in the competition – though they were UEFA Cup runners-up in 1990/91.

• The Giallorossi have now made it four qualifications from as many UEFA Europa League group stage participations. Last season, unlike in 2009/10, 2016/17 and this term, they did not top their group, finishing second to İstanbul Başakşehir despite beating the Turkish club home (4-0) and away (3-0). Their only other European win last season was 1-0 at home to Gent in the first leg of the round of 32 (1-1 a).

• Roma's overall away record in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W5 D4 L2 with wins in the three most recent fixtures, including this season at Young Boys (2-1) and CFR Cluj (2-0).

Links and trivia
• Roma's Pedro Rodríguez is one game shy of his 100th in UEFA club competition. He has scored 24 goals in his 99 appearances.

• Roma's Henrikh Mkhitaryan has made 49 appearances in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final.

• Italian midfielder Stefano Beltrame joined CSKA from Juventus Under-23s in January 2020 – seven years after his one Serie A appearance, as a substitute, for the senior Bianconeri side. He was subsequently sent out on loan to seven clubs, including four in Italy – Bari, Modena, Pro Vercelli and Pordenone.

• CSKA striker Ali Sowe joined from Chievo in 2019, having also represented several lower-league Italian teams. In 2013 he became the first Gambian to play in Serie A.

• CSKA are one of six group stage debutants in this season's UEFA Europa League – alongside Granada and Omonoia (both E), Leicester City (G), Sivasspor (I) and Royal Antwerp (J). They are the only one without a win after five matchdays.

• CSKA, who appointed Bruno Akrapović as their new head coach ahead of Matchday 4, are the only one of the 48 teams in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage yet to score a goal. No club has ever gone through a group without scoring in this competition, eight teams having previously managed a single goal.
