Match background Only this chapter

Already through to the round of 32 as winners of Group I, Villarreal will hope to overhaul four-time UEFA Europa League champions Sevilla with a competition-record 43rd victory as they host eliminated Qarabağ on Matchday 6.

• The Spanish side recorded their record-equalling 42nd win in the UEFA Europa League proper by defeating Sivasspor 1-0 in Turkey last time out thanks to a 75th-minute Samu Chukwueze strike – a result that moved them on to 13 points from a possible 15 – while Qarabağ finally claimed their first point of the section by holding second-placed Maccabi Tel-Aviv to a 1-1 home draw, Spanish midfielder Jaime Romero scoring the equaliser.

Previous meetings
• Villarreal faced opposition from Azerbaijan for the first time on Matchday 2, Paco Alcácer coming off the bench to score a double as the Spanish side came from a goal down late on to beat Qarabağ 3-1 in Istanbul.

• Qarabağ are now without a win in five games against Spanish opposition (D2 L3), but they did claim a famous 1-1 draw away to Atlético de Madrid on their UEFA Champions League group stage debut – and their first visit to Spain – in 2017/18.

Form guide
Villarreal
• Villarreal finished fifth in the 2019/20 Spanish Liga to return to Europe after a season's absence and participate in the UEFA Europa League group stage for a record-equalling eighth time.

• The Spanish club have yet to finish outside the top two in their eight UEFA Europa League group campaigns and have now gone through as section winners four times. In 2018/19 they finished first with ten points and an unbeaten record ahead of Rapid Wien, Rangers and Spartak Moskva before knocking out Sporting CP and Zenit and eventually crashing out to local rivals Valencia in the last eight (1-3 h, 0-2 a). Their best seasons in the competition were 2010/11 and 2015/16, when they reached the semi-finals.

• Villarreal's record at home in 23 UEFA Europa League group stage matches is W17 D3 L3, including two high-scoring wins this season – 5-3 against Sivasspor on Matchday 1 and 4-0 versus Maccabi Tel-Aviv on Matchday 3.

Qarabağ
• Qarabağ were crowned champions of Azerbaijan for the seventh season running in 2019/20 – and eighth overall – having held an eight-point lead over second-placed Neftçi when the Premyer Liqa was abandoned in the early spring. Their sixth successive European group campaign, all under long-serving coach Gurban Gurbanov, ended, like all the others, in the autumn when they finished third in UEFA Europa League Group A behind Sevilla and APOEL.

• This season, as in 2019/20, Qarabağ began their European journey in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, but were eliminated two rounds later by Norwegian champions Molde in a penalty shoot-out after a goalless draw in Larnaca, Cyprus. They made amends by beating Legia Warszawa 3-0 away in their UEFA Europa League play-off to reach the group stage for the sixth time.

• Qarabağ's record away from home in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W4 D1 L12, the latest two defeats having come this season at Maccabi Tel-Aviv (0-1) and Sivasspor (0-2).

Links and trivia
• Romero joined Qarabağ from Córdoba in 2019 having played for a number of clubs in his homeland, including Granada and Osasuna in the Liga. His one game against Villarreal in Spain was a 3-1 away defeat for Osasuna in September 2016.

• Qarabağ's Ghanaian striker Kwabwena Owusu, who scored against Villarreal on Matchday 2, has also played in Spain. Although he joined Liga side Leganés from Toledo in 2017, he never played in the top flight, spending the next four seasons out on loan at lower-league clubs Oviedo, Cartagena, Salamanca and Córdoba.

• Villarreal have played more matches in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final, than any other club. This is their 80th encounter – eight more than second-placed Salzburg.

• The 14 goals scored by Villarreal this season have lifted their all-time total in the competition to a record 138, nine more than Liga rivals Sevilla, with whom they share the record for most UEFA Europa League wins (42).

• Villarreal coach Unai Emery has overseen 84 matches in the UEFA Europa League proper – 27 more than any other coach. He led Sevilla to all three of their trophy successes from 2013/14 to 2015/16 and was also a losing finalist with Arsenal in 2018/19.
