Match background Only this chapter

Paired together in European competition for the second successive season, LOSC Lille and Ajax go head to head in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 with the Dutch club competing in the knockout phase of the competition for a record-breaking ninth time.

• Christophe Galtier's LOSC finished as runners-up in Group H during the autumn, ceding top spot to AC Milan after losing for the first time on Matchday 6, 3-2 at eliminated Celtic. Erik ten Hag's Ajax also lost their final group game, a 0-1 home defeat by Atalanta consigning them to third place behind Liverpool and the Italian side in UEFA Champions League Group D.

Previous meetings
• Ajax were the dominant team when the clubs met in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage, beating LOSC 3-0 in Amsterdam and 2-0 in northern France with Quincy Promes on target in both games. Neither team managed to qualify from the group, however, Ajax finishing third and LOSC fourth behind Valencia and Chelsea.

• The French side's only other European engagement with Dutch opposition was a UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie with PSV Eindhoven in 2010/11, which they lost 5-3 on aggregate (2-2 h, 1-3 a).

• Ajax's record in 28 UEFA matches against French clubs is W13 D7 L8. In France it is W5 D3 L6, last season's victory at LOSC ending a seven-match winless run in the country (D2 L5). Although they lost their only previous UEFA Europa League fixture on French soil, 3-1 at Lyon in the second leg of the 2016/17 semi-final, it was a result that favoured the Dutch side as they had won the first leg 4-1 in Amsterdam. They went on to lose the Stockholm final 2-0 to Manchester United.

• The Amsterdam club's record in two-legged UEFA knockout ties against French clubs is W4 L4, the most recent ending in elimination on away goals by Nice in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round (1-1 a, 2-2 h).

Form guide
LOSC
• LOSC qualified for the UEFA Europa League group stage for the fourth time thanks to the fourth place they occupied when last season's Ligue 1 campaign ended prematurely in March.

• The French club made it three successful group stage qualifications out of four by winning three and drawing two of their six Group H fixtures, the highlights two big away wins at Sparta Praha (4-1) and Milan (3-0), each of which were sparked by hat-tricks from Turkish international Yusuf Yazıcı. LOSC also drew at home to the Italian side but were unseated from top spot by them on Matchday 6 as they lost in Glasgow and Milan won in Prague.

• LOSC's first UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie, in the competition's inaugural season of 2009/10, proved successful as they overcame Fenerbahçe 3-2 on aggregate (2-1 h, 1-1 a), but they lost at the same stage the following year to PSV. This is therefore the club's first round of 32 encounter for a decade.

• Les Dogues ended a run of 14 European home matches without a win (D7 L7) when they defeated Sparta 2-1 on Matchday 5. Although their all-time home record in the UEFA Europa League, qualifying phase included, is now an impressive W10 D7 L2, that win against the Czech side was their first at home in the competition since Matchday 6 of their domestic double-winning 2010/11 season, when they beat Gent 3-0.

Ajax
• Although no Dutch title was awarded in 2019/20, Ajax were leading the standings at the time of the Eredivisie stoppage in March and were entered into this season's UEFA Champions League group stage.

• The Amsterdam club's 16th participation in the UEFA Champions League group stage ran along similar lines to their 15th, a 0-1 home defeat on Matchday 6 sending the 2018/19 semi-finalists out of the competition and into the UEFA Europa League knockout phase. Defeated 1-0 by Liverpool home and away, they did the double over Danish debutants Midtjylland (2-1 a, 3-1 h), their only other point coming from a 2-2 draw at Atalanta in which they surrendered a two-goal lead.

• Ajax have come through only three of their eight previous UEFA Europa League round of 32 ties, the last two both at the expense of Legia Warszawa, in 2014/15 and 2016/17, having also knocked out Anderlecht in 2010/11. Juventus (2019/10), Manchester United (2011/12), Steaua Bucureşti (2012/13), Salzburg (2013/14) and Getafe (2019/20) have all got the better of them at this stage.

• Ajax's away record in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 is W3 D2 L3; in the knockout phase it is W3 D2 L8, all of their matches on the road from the round of 16 onwards having ended in defeat. Indeed, they are without a win outside Amsterdam, play-offs and final included, in nine UEFA Europa League fixtures, losing the last six.

Links and trivia
• Dutch defender Sven Botman came through the Ajax youth system and played on loan at Heerenveen in 2019/20 before joining LOSC.

• Ajax captain Dušan Tadić was a Southampton team-mate of LOSC pair José Fonte (2014–17) and Jérémy Pied (2016–18).

• Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg also played with Fonte at Southampton in 2015/16, having spent the previous season in France on loan at Monaco.

• LOSC's Yusuf Yazıcı is the joint leading scorer in this season's UEFA Europa League with six goals, the same number as Pizzi of Benfica.

• Ajax are one of six former European Cup winners in this season's UEFA Europa League knockout phase, the others being Benfica, Crvena zvezda, Manchester United, AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven. They are also one of six former UEFA Cup winners in this season's round of 32 – along with Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, PSV, Shakhtar Donetsk and Tottenham Hotspur.
