Match background Only this chapter

Two clubs that finished third in their UEFA Champions League groups go into the second leg of their UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie level-pegging after a 1-1 draw in Kyiv.

• Club Brugge picked up eight points in UEFA Champions League Group F during the autumn, although a closing draw at Lazio meant they lost out to the Italian side for second place behind section winners Borussia Dortmund. Dynamo, meanwhile, managed just half as many points as the Belgian side, three of those coming on Matchday 6 when they beat Ferencváros 1-0 at home to claim third spot in Group G – a long way behind top two Juventus and Barcelona.

Previous meetings
• There was nothing to choose between the clubs in the first leg, with Dynamo taking the lead on 62 minutes through Vitaliy Buyalskiy but Club Brugge striking back five minutes later as Belgian international defender Brandon Mechele ended a 46-game wait for his first European goal.

• The clubs met in UEFA competition for the first time in last season's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, Club Brugge going through 4-3 on aggregate. A Hans Vanaken penalty gave the Belgian side a first-leg advantage before they came from behind three times in Kyiv to draw 3-3.

• Club Brugge's all-time record against Ukrainian clubs is now W4 D8 L4, with just one defeat at home, albeit a heavy one, Shakhtar Donetsk overcoming them 4-1 in Bruges on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Europa League in the competition's inaugural 2009/10 season. Prior to that 1-0 home win against Dynamo in 2019, Club Brugge were on a nine-game winless run against Ukrainian opposition, home and away, which included a quarter-final defeat in 2014/15 by Dnipro (0-0 h, 0-1 a).

• Dynamo faced Belgian opponents again in this season's UEFA Champions League qualifying phase, and this time they were victorious, overcoming Gent 5-1 on aggregate in the play-offs (2-1 a, 3-0 h) with Uruguayan midfielder Carlos De Pena scoring in both legs.

• Dynamo also beat Gent twice in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, but their only win in seven European matches against Belgian opposition outside the qualifying phase was a 4-0 defeat of Anderlecht in the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League first group stage. Though victorious on those two visits to Gent, Dynamo have lost their other four matches in Belgium.

Form guide
Club Brugge
• Proclaimed Belgian champions in the curtailed 2019/20 campaign, Club Brugge qualified for an unprecedented third successive season in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

• As in 2018/19 and 2019/20, the Belgian side finished third in their section, but the eight points Philippe Clement's team claimed in beating Zenit twice (2-1 a, 3-0 h) and holding Lazio to two draws (1-1 h, 2-2 a) – they also lost 3-0 twice to Dortmund – equalled the club's best ever haul in a UEFA Champions League group (2003/04).

• Club Brugge are appearing in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 for the sixth time. They have won only one of their previous five ties at this stage, against Danish side Aalborg (3-1 a, 3-0 h) in 2014/15, when they went on to reach the quarter-finals. Their interest in the competition ended at this stage in 2009/10 against Valencia (1-0 h, 0-3 a), 2011/12 against Hannover (1-2 a, 0-1 h), 2018/19 against Salzburg (2-1 h, 0-4 a), and 2019/20 against Manchester United (1-1 h, 0-5 a).

• The Belgian club's record at home in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase is W4 D2 L1.

• Club Brugge have won 12 of the 15 UEFA ties in which they recorded an away draw in the first leg, though they lost the most recent, against Copenhagen in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round (0-0 a, 2-3 h). They have been triumphant on all four previous occasions when they have drawn the first away leg 1-1, but it took a penalty shoot-out for them to prevail the last time that happened, against Dynamo's domestic rivals Shakhtar in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

Dynamo
• Dynamo finished as Ukrainian Premier League runners-up behind Shakhtar for the fourth season running in 2019/20, although they did claim a 21st domestic cup, defeating Vorskla Poltava 8-7 on penalties in the final after a 1-1 draw.

• Eliminated in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage, after finishing third in their section behind Malmö and Copenhagen, Dynamo returned to the UEFA Champions League proper this term for the first time in four seasons thanks to qualifying wins against AZ Alkmaar (2-0 h) and Gent. However, two defeats each to Juventus (0-2 h, 0-3 a) and Barcelona (1-2 a, 0-4 h) left Mircea Lucescu's side contesting third place with Ferencváros, with whom they drew the first meeting 2-2 in Budapest.

• The club's best UEFA Europa League performance was in 2014/15, when they reached the quarter-finals, having also been semi-finalists in the last UEFA Cup of 2008/09. This is Dynamo's seventh UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie, four of their previous six having ended in victory, including all of the last three – against Guingamp in 2014/15 (1-2 a, 3-1 h), AEK Athens in 2017/18 (1-1 a, 0-0 h) and Olympiacos in 2018/19 (2-2 a, 1-0 h).

• Dynamo are without a post-Christmas European away win since a 4-1 victory against Beşiktaş in Istanbul in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League round of 32. That is the club's sole success on the road in a springtime knockout tie since they beat the same opponents 5-0 in Izmir in the 1986/87 European Cup quarter-final first leg. Their away record in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase is W1 D5 L6, with no wins in the last 11.

• Dynamo have won only three of the 18 previous UEFA ties in which they drew the first leg at home, their last such success having come on away goals against Valencia at this stage of the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League (1-1 h, 2-2 a). They have drawn the home leg 1-1 five times since then but lost every tie, most recently against Fiorentina in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League quarter-final (0-2 a).

• Three of Dynamo's first four eliminations from the UEFA Europa League knockout phase came in ties where they drew the first leg 1-1 at home.
