Match background Only this chapter

Having got their UEFA Europa League group stage debut off to a winning start, West Ham United will be keen to consolidate their position on top of the Group H table as they welcome competition regulars Rapid Wien to the London Stadium.

• The Hammers overcame Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in the Croatian capital on Matchday 1 with a goal in each half from Michail Antonio and Declan Rice, while there was a late setback for Rapid as they conceded in added time to lose 0-1 at home to Genk.

Previous meetings
• This is West Ham's first meeting with an Austrian club in UEFA competition.

• Rapid have lost four of their five matches in England, winning the other, 3-2 at Aston Villa in August 2010 to eliminate the Birmingham club from the UEFA Europa League play-offs for the second season running. Their most recent visit was to London in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage, where they were beaten 4-1 by Arsenal.

• Rapid also lost 3-1 to Everton in the 1984/85 European Cup Winners' Cup final in Rotterdam.

Form guide
West Ham
• A sixth-placed finish in the 2020/21 Premier League has earned West Ham a first appearance in the group stage of a UEFA competition. On each of their last two continental campaigns, in 2015/16 and 2016/17, they were eliminated in the UEFA Europa League qualifying phase by Romanian club Astra Giurgiu.

• The East Londoners won the European Cup Winners' Cup in their debut season of European participation in 1964/65, beating 1860 München 2-0 in the Wembley final, and would reach the semi-finals, final and quarter-finals of that same competition over the next 16 years. The furthest they have gone in the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League was in 1999/2000, when, after qualifying as UEFA Intertoto Cup winners, they beat Osijek to reach the second round, where they lost to another Romanian club, Steaua Bucureşti (0-2 a, 0-0 h). On their last UEFA Cup appearance, in 2006/07, they were first-round fallers against Italian side Palermo (0-1 h, 0-3 a).

• West Ham have played two European games at the London Stadium, winning the first, 3-0 against Domžale in what was the club's first official encounter at the venue, but losing the second, 0-1 to Astra. The Hammers' overall home record in Europe is W17 D3 L5.

Rapid
• Runners-up in the Austrian Bundesliga for the second successive campaign, with a 15-point deficit on serial champions Salzburg, Rapid entered this season's UEFA Champions League second qualifying round but lost out to Sparta Praha (2-1 h, 0-2 a) before overcoming Anorthosis (3-0 h, 1-2 a) and Zorya Luhansk (3-0 h, 3-2 a) to secure a competition joint-best ninth appearance – alongside Lazio and PSV Eindhoven – in the UEFA Europa League group stage.

• Dietmar Kühbauer's side finished third in their UEFA Europa League section last season to make it six qualifying failures out of eight for Rapid. The Viennese side won their group in 2015/16 and qualified for the knockout phase as runners-up in 2018/19, but were unable to finish higher than third in a 2020/21 section containing Arsenal, Molde and Dundalk.

• Rapid have lost ten of their last 14 away fixtures in the UEFA Europa League, qualifying included, although the success at Zorya last time out made it two wins in the last four. Their all-time record on the road in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W5 D3 L16.

Links and trivia
• New West Ham recruit Nikola Vlašić's next appearance in UEFA club competition will be his 50th.

• Rapid defender Kevin Wimmer made 15 Premier League appearances for West Ham's London rivals Tottenham Hotspur (2015–17) before moving to Stoke City, where he had 17 further outings in England's top flight.

• Another Rapid player, Christoph Knasmüllner, had a brief spell at English club Barnsley in 2018, playing just three matches in the Championship.

• West Ham's Andriy Yarmolenko and Pablo Fornals have both scored against Rapid in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League, the former for Dynamo Kyiv in a 2-2 away draw in 2013/14, the latter for Villarreal in a 5-0 home win in 2018/19.

• West Ham are one of just two newcomers to the UEFA Europa League proper in 2021/22, the other Brøndby in Group A.

• West Ham manager David Moyes has been successful in each of his three previous European group stages, making further progress as Everton's boss in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup and 2009/10 UEFA Europa League and with Manchester United in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League.

• Rapid have conceded a competition-high 102 goals in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final. Their tally of 28 defeats is also a competition record.
