Match background Only this chapter

The record champions of the Czech Republic and Scotland go head to head for the first time in 30 years as Sparta Praha host Rangers, with both teams looking to register their first win in UEFA Europa League Group A.

• While Sparta drew their opening group fixture 0-0 at Brøndby, Rangers were defeated 2-0 in Glasgow by Lyon – the Scottish champions' second successive home defeat by that margin in the UEFA Europa League following their loss to, and elimination by, Sparta's city rivals Slavia Praha in last season's round of 16.

Previous meetings
• The only previous UEFA contest between the clubs was in the 1991/92 European Cup first round, Sparta winning the first leg 1-0 in Prague and taking the tie on away goals after a 2-1 extra-time defeat at Ibrox.

• Sparta are undefeated in six matches against Scottish opposition since that 1991 encounter, beating Celtic 4-1 both in Glasgow and Prague in last season's group stage with five of the eight goals scored by Lukáš Juliš. Their home record against Scottish teams is W3 D1.

• Rangers have never won in four visits to the Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia. Their 1-1 draw in the first leg of last season's UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie with Slavia was the first time they had avoided defeat, with Filip Helander's equaliser their first goal in the country.

Form guide
Sparta
• Sparta finished distant runners-up to Slavia in the 2020/21 Czech Liga, 12 points in arrears, but their European prize was the same – a place in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round. Unlike Slavia, Pavel Vrba's team won that tie, beating Rapid Wien 3-2 on aggregate (1-2 a, 2-0 h), before falling in the next round to Monaco (0-2 h, 1-3 a) and therefore qualifying for an eighth appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage – a Czech record.

• This is the club's 39th successive European campaign and their second in a row in the UEFA Europa League group stage. They failed to make further progress last time, winning those two games against Celtic but losing all four against LOSC Lille and AC Milan. Nevertheless, they have prolonged their involvement in four of their previous seven participations, reaching the quarter-finals in 2015/16.

• Sparta have lost only three of their 21 UEFA Europa League home group games (W12 D6) but had their 15-match unbeaten run ended on Matchday 1 last term when they were humbled 4-1 in the Czech capital by LOSC. After beating Celtic by the same score in Prague on Matchday 4, they bowed out with a further home defeat, 0-1 against Milan.

Rangers
• Undefeated champions of Scotland in 2020/21 as they claimed a record-extending 55th domestic league title, Rangers also played 13 matches in the UEFA Europa League as they progressed from the second qualifying round to the round of 16, only to have their run ended by Slavia.

• Rangers returned to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in a decade this term, but their adventure lasted just two matches as they lost both third qualifying round legs 2-1 to Malmö and therefore transferred to the UEFA Europa League play-offs, where they edged Armenian champions Alashkert (1-0 h, 0-0 a) to reach the UEFA Europa League group stage for the fourth successive season. They have improved in each of the previous three campaigns, all under manager Steven Gerrard, finishing third in 2018/19, second in 2019/20 and first, ahead of Benfica, Standard Liège and Lech Poznań, in 2020/21.

• Rangers went through the whole of their 2020/21 European campaign without an away defeat (W5 D2) and have lost just one of their last 12 fixtures outside Glasgow in the UEFA Europa League, qualifying included (W6 D5). Their record on the road in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W2 D4 L3, the two victories having come last season – at Standard and Lech (both 2-0).

Links and trivia
• This is Gerrard's 50th European match in charge of Rangers.

• Sparta goalkeeper Florin Niţa and Rangers midfielder Ianis Hagi are both current Romanian internationals.

• Ondřej Čelůstka started the Czech Republic's 2-0 win against Scotland at UEFA EURO 2020 in Glasgow, his Sparta team-mate Adam Hložek later coming on as a substitute.

• Sparta's Swedish midfielder David Moberg Karlsson played on loan for Kilmarnock in in the second half of 2013/14, but made only four appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

• In addition to scoring there for Rangers against Slavia last season, Helander has happy memories of Prague, where he helped Sweden win the final of the 2015 UEFA Under-21 Championship against Portugal – though he was substituted at half-time in a game that was eventually decided on penalties after a goalless draw.

• The Scottish club are one of eight reigning domestic champions competing in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League group stage.
